Background: In 1959, three years before independence from Belgium, the majority ethnic group, the Hutus, overthrew the ruling Tutsi king. Over the next several years, thousands of Tutsis were killed, and some 150,000 driven into exile in neighboring countries. The children of these exiles later formed a rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), and began a civil war in 1990. The war, along with several political and economic upheavals, exacerbated ethnic tensions, culminating in April 1994 in the genocide of roughly 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The Tutsi rebels defeated the Hutu regime and ended the killing in July 1994, but approximately 2 million Hutu refugees - many fearing Tutsi retribution - fled to neighboring Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and the former Zaire. Since then, most of the refugees have returned to Rwanda, but about 10,000 that remain in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo have formed an extremist insurgency bent on retaking Rwanda, much as the RPF tried in 1990. Despite substantial international assistance and political reforms - including Rwanda's first local elections in March 1999 and its first post-genocide presidential and legislative elections in August and September 2003, respectively - the country continues to struggle to boost investment and agricultural output, and ethnic reconciliation is complicated by the real and perceived Tutsi political dominance. Kigali's increasing centralization and intolerance of dissent, the nagging Hutu extremist insurgency across the border, and Rwandan involvement in two wars in recent years in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to hinder Rwanda's efforts to escape its bloody legacy.

It was an amazing experience, definitely a trip highlight! The trek itself was tough! We pretty much hiked uphill for 3 hours straight, gaining approximately 600m in elevation. The trails were muddy, and at times very steep. Also we had to be wary of the stinging nettles. When we did see the gorillas, it was on a steep hill and through dense bush, which made it tough for viewing, but the guide and trackers were amazing, and always tried to help place us in a better spot for taking photos and viewing the gorillas. We visited the Bwenge group which had [View Full Entry]

Ceci etant dit, l'expression in the middle of nowhere y prend tout sons sens.

we leave monday morning at like 5am for arusha, tanzania. i'm in an internet cafe trying to work on my paper that's due tomorrow, but i'm managing to avoid it by spending time doing other things... like typing this out. the keyboard is totally throwing me off because the enter and shift keys are shaped different - super annoying. i went to church today for the second time in many many years. the first time here i went to mass with my family (they're catholic) and the service was in kinyarwanda - it was interesting but really really hot. i spent [View Full Entry]

After a 40 minute hike, 2 gorillas came down to greet us.
Short version: check blog title. Truly one of the most amazing things you can do in this world. Long version: I secured a permit through the Rwanda tourism board while I was still in the US back in March which involved the seemingly sketchy process of wiring money to the National Bank of Rwanda in Kigali. I must have been crazy trying to plan something like that more than 3 months in advance. There are 12 gorilla groups only 7 of which are available for tracking the other 5 set aside for research groups. 8 tourists are allowed to track each [View Full Entry]

with another keyboard in arabic. it's very beautiful here. actually really beautiful. i was glad to hear back from so many people - it makes my day because no one calls me and i haven't been able to call the us from my phone now that i'm in rwanda. tomorrow night we move into our homestays - it's starting to go by quicker and i guess i have to admit i'm getting a bit sick of being around people sometimes... we drove to the border and crossed it on foot yesterday. literally a few minutes after driving we passed a genocide [View Full Entry]
