March 18, 2008 We woke up this morning and went to breakfast before packing our things up to leave. Then we got on our favorite bus, and started our drive. We got a tour of Meknes, and stopped to see the city from the outside. We could see the walls enclosing the city and the numerous minarets. Then we went to the “best gate” in Meknes. The gate leads into a market, or medina. Then we got back into the bus to go to Tétouan. When we finally got here, Mohammad took us on a little tour of the important streets, which you could tell were important because they are named after the King’s father. We went the King’s Palace, and then made our way through the streets to a flea market. After that we stopped ... read more

March 16, 2008 We woke up and went to breakfast this morning. It was probably one of the best breakfasts in awhile. I ate a lot! We left the hotel to make our way to the Sahara in Toyota Land Cruisers. We first went to the Valle de los Fosiles, a museum of sorts. The guide showed us various rocks that have fossils in them. They make furniture and figurines out of these fossils. While I was there, one of the sales guys came up to me and said, “You are very nice. You are very pretty. You can live with me in Morocco if you want.” I told him I had to go and left! I ended up choosing the best driver for our 4x4’s. He has been doing off-roading in the Sahara for 20 ... read more

March 14, 2008 This morning came very quickly as Julie and I had to leave home at 5:00 am (4:30 wake-up for me!) to catch the bus around 5:45 for out 6:00 departure. Bus ride #1 was a little over 2 hours and took us to Algeciras, Spain, to catch the ferry across the Mediterranean Sea. That was the first time I have been on a ship that big, but due to the little sleep I had had, I slept most of the hour ride. We finally made it to AFRICA! We arrived in Ceuta which is still a Spanish territory. We got on our second bus and made our way to the Moroccan border. Our tour guide, Mohammad, collected all of our passports so we didn’t have to do that. However, one girl who lives ... read more

Welcome to our new blog. We were blogging on blogger.com but ran into problems when we were in Morocco and looking after a bit of searching around we found this site which we will be using from now on. This entry describes some of the tanneries we saw in Fes last week. We tried to put this up on blogger but it got a bit overwhelmed. Which is just how we felt when confronted with the powerful smell emanating from some of these ancient tanneries. A part of the process of turning the animal hides (camel, goat, sheep, cow) into leather involves marinating them in pigeon poo for a few weeks. Given these tanneries have been around since the 13th century, a slight pong is understandable. Fortunately our guide, who not surprisingly was also a leather ... read more

from the masterpiece of Islamic architecture, through souks and eating sheep brain, 5h camel ride and feeding a desert puppy, to the well deserved beach time Since India always wanted to go to Morocco as it supposed to be similar in a way....the way people behave, the way streets look like etc At least that is what friends told us....relatively close to UK, relatively cheap flights and stay...we said why not lets see.... the major downside of working full time is your holiday allowance and the fact that you cannot just go for long....hence the 10 days we could spare were planned very intensively to see whatever we could in this short time;-) So we visited 5 different places: Casablanca - where we flew just to see The Mosque of King Hessian II, Marrakech - for ... read more

Today has been a super fantastic wonderful day. We lost an hour of sleep last night which is not super, fantastic or wonderful, but I slept right through my alarm until noon. I missed my economics class which is a-okay with me. (Sorry mom, I’m the one paying the bills now so I can make the rules!) It’s been rainy all day which surprisingly I didn’t mind. In fact it reminded me a bit of being back in Ireland and it was quite refreshing to feel the rain on my face again. Unquestionably, the best part of my day is when I received the email telling me a final exam of mine has been cancelled! I’ve gotten some work done today, but I spent most of the day just wandering around the boat and finally feeling ... read more

I’ve been traveling the world for four months. I have been to 11 countries on 4 continents since Thanksgiving. I have discovered many things about myself, about the people around me and humanity as a whole. We are all interconnected and so similar yet so different at the same time. I can best describe what I have seen and experienced through Skittles. Yes, Skittles. In America, a pack of skittles would cost roughly 60 cents. The bag would be in English with five flavors: grape, lime, orange, strawberry and lemon. Skittles would be sold at most grocery stores, markets, gas stations, etc. In China, a pack of skittles costs roughly 10 cents. The bag still looks the same, except it’s in Mandarin. While still containing 5 flavors, they have changed. Instead of lime, the green skittles ... read more

We decided to take advantage of St Paddy's and Easter weekends being back to back and headed to Morocco for a 9 day adventure to soak up some sun, and enjoy some mint tea and tajines Spent our first 3 days in Marrakech, staying in an amazing Riad (traditional Moroccan house) and exploring the old city. The main square was very impressive, full of sights and sounds including snake charmers, a million fresh orange juice stalls and henna tattoo artists Then we decided to catch the train up to Fes for a couple of days of wandering through the maze that is the medina, all the streets are very narrow and look exactly the same so it is very easy to get lost which we discovered quickly. Fes is also the leather capital and a visit ... read more
