We arrived in Nairobi in the veil of dark. Not good, you should always try to avoid arriving at night in Africa, unless you know where you’re going and have arranged a pickup. Which I obviously hadn’t. Fortunately the driver of the shuttle had realised this and decided to hang around to make sure we were okay before he departed. We managed to get a cabin too ourseves for the duration of my brothers stay The fist day in Niarobi we walked around the city center for about half a day, we did this again the next day, as I was already spending loads of cash on him and couldn’t afford anything exciting until … My brothers’ penultimate day in Niarobi I decided that we should see some thing else, this is his first visit to ... read more

Last week I began my volunteer teaching. It took a couple of days to get used to the flow and to get used to what my responsibilities would be, but everything is going very well. I’m at Good Samaritan High School which is just a five minute walk from where I live. By U.S. standards it is located in a terribly poor part of town, but by Kenyan standards the area is just mildly depressed. I’ll be teaching math and business to 9th and 10th graders for a total of 18 lessons each week. So far, I’m actually like teaching the math better than teaching the business because it is very straightforward and computational as compared to teaching business which is more lecturing and giving notes, but I’m enjoying teaching business more and more each day. ... read more

Saturday - Another day of change. Woke up after a good night of sleep and went down to have breakfast with Steve and Adam and Anita, who missed breakfast in the end. Did see them eventually and said goodbye. The more good-byes to Louise, Gareth, Steve, Dave, Steve, and Adam. Lots of Steves and Adams. Steve and Dave walked me over to the Boulevard Hotel, where I would be staying with Barbel for the night. We chatted a bit and then headed out for some yummy and pricey Italian food, but it was good. Headed over to the internet for a bit and then back to the hotel to relax and repack. Felt a little ill but it might have been all the change. Sunday - Today was a crazy day, as all my last days ... read more

Crime, poverty, poor transport, poorer roads, corrupt governments, smudged cities, Africa is the unexplored continent, the unknown. It’s as if all my travel so far has been to prepare me for these final 2 months, and although I feel uneasy, I’m squiggling in my seat with excitement. From the outset, I’ve not been expecting travel in East Africa to be easy, but I am hoping the rewards will be great. Though, I must admit, up to now it hasn’t exactly been difficult! I’ve been waited on with 4-course dinners, driven around on a safari, have slept in safety and fed like a king at an Indian man’s mansion. The real journey starts now, as I sit writing this in a private bus company’s waiting room at night (in Kenya, going out at night is not the ... read more

After 27 hours of travelling I made it to Kenya. I was dissapointed to stop in Bangkok airport for only 30mins - I've never been to Asia before... I spent about 4hrs in the Dubai airport as well, and we're flying back through for a night on the way to Morocco, so I'm hoping to at least ride around in a cab for a few hours and see the city. Emirates is an awesome airline. I had maybe 200 movies and 100 TV shows to chose from. I'm finally in Africa. It is wild. I was worried about getting a visa at the airport, but it went smoothly. I got a cab to our hotel, then paid a cab driver to drive me around town for 1.5hrs. I was told it's too dangerous to walk around. ... read more

May 28, 2006 - Day 43 - Got up early to get everything together and woke up Jules and Jon to say good-bye. Sat with them a bit and then had a look at the truck I would be on for the next two weeks. Much different than the two Nomad trucks - it was much more open and enormous than the others had been. It also had plastic roll-down windows and no storage areas in the truck at all. All the luggage had to be stored underneath the truck with no access to it during the day. There was also room for about 30 people, and Matt told me it would basically be full the whole way. That is a lot of people. After seeing the truck it was time to go. Said good-bye to ... read more

Arrived in Kenya at 6.30am this morning, just as the sun was coming up. Not the best flight. Didn't take off until 1.00am (2 hour delay) and then had the pleasure of sitting next to the most miserable woman who complained about everything, including the fact that the music on my ipod was too loud! I don't know how she could hear it over the noise of the plane. Anyway, I turned it down and then turned it back up again and she didn't even notice! Had such a great time in Cairo. The resort was close to the pyramids so away from Cairo centre, which with 2 million people (out of 7 million total population) felt incredibly busy. The driving was as I remembered from previous trips to Egypt - no rules, anything goes, compulsory ... read more

Hell’s Gate National Park was the first park we decided to visit, a simple two day trek into the dramatic Rift Valley. We found a matatu, a 14 passenger mini van that in reality holds 20 people and speeds along the potholed streets with surprising dexterity. We loaded the back seat with our backpacks and food and headed for the park. Getting transportation in Kenya is a snap; we simply buy out all the seats in the mini van and tell them where we want to go. For an hour and half drive, we only paid about 3 dollars to be dropped off at the park entrance. We paid a whopping 25 dollar entrance fee. Parks are not cheep for us mzungu (white person in Swahili), but then again we don’t have zebras and baboons roaming ... read more

After getting in from the safari, we were happy to find a bed, a bar and a shower. We decided to give another hostel in Arusha a shot, only to find it wasn't as nice as our original choice, the Meru House Inn. However, there was a more lively group of fellow travellers, including Brian, Heather and Cory from Canada and Nicholas from Belgium. Since we'd all returned that day, everybody sacked out early. Given that the next day was Sunday, that we had nothing planned, and that we slept away the morning, there wasn't much to accomplish. Unfortunately, Arusha isn't a town that enchants you with its charm or beauty. As with most African towns, it's utilitarian, and features the strong recommendation that you don't go out after dark. We were able to set up ... read more
