Im naked. Africa has stripped me of my ridiculous sham of an ego far more quckly and effectively than I ever imagined it could. We have been in Kenya for just over a week now - still riding the waves of culture shock. These have been some of the most colourful yet challenging days of my life. I think I fell in love with Kenya the second that Meg and I set foot in the arrivals gate at the airport in Nairobi and were met with the smile of Dan Ogola. We had blindly contacted Dan via the internet- I had lifted his email off of a website to ask some questions about the Kibera slums. As such, there was no one to verify the legitimacy of our host and we were prepared to spend our ... read more

Maasia Mara We got of the over night bus and caught a taxi to the meeting point for the Maasia Mara, the train station. 7 am at Nairobi train station. No one was there. I hastily called the safari company. They came by and picked us up. We took care of the payment and after buying some essentials, off to the Mara we went. It was a 9 hour journey by road. We stopped briefly so that the others could switch vehicles and then came the bumpiest road I have ever been on. For 6 hours we were tossed, jolted, churned and thrown around in the 4x4. It wasn’t so much that the road had pot holes on it, it was more like there were islands of tarmac in the dirt. Most of the time the ... read more

Can't believe I only have two more days in Mombasa. The time has flown by. I've been keeping really busy. The last few days I've been working on my paper. (In fact I'm waiting for it to print right now) I sent the parents off to Tiwi Beach the day after we got back from the Maasai Mara. They were getting annoying so had to send em to the beach as punishment. lol... actually I wanted to go with them, but I had to finish my paper. Oh well... you have to do those kinds of things near the end of a semester. I have my finals next week. Yikes... don't even know what I should be studying. I guess I'll find that out when I take the exam. lol The Maasai Mara was wonderful. It's ... read more

As I sit in the comfort of a cozy home in Katy, Texas with soft carpet, electricity at all times of the day, running water (even hot at that!), and a soft bed I think of the kids in Kenya. The kids of Into Abba’s Arms with whom I shared a fun filled, educational six months. I think of my room with the cement floor that was separated from the five little girls’ room by a thin piece of plywood that didn’t quite reach the ceiling and how I would hear their giggles each night at bedtime. Of the generator being switched off at 9:15 p.m. and how our home on the hill went from brightly lit (one of the only houses around with lights) to pitch dark in one instant. It wasn’t a problem if ... read more

It's been a while since I last wrote an entry. Sorry things have been busy. My parents arrived Mon. May 1st. =) It's soooo good to see them. Before they arrived I was busy with interviews and getting research done. I was also busy planning some of the things we would do. It was a busy week and I was very anxious to finally have them here. Mon. morning I woke up early and went to the airport with Mkuu, my host-mom. It was a great first day with my parents and was wonderful to see them again. We came back to Mkuu's place and had a wonderful Swahili breakfast. Yummy yummy food and lots of it. My plan for the first day was just to walk them around Mombasa a bit. They arrived at 7 ... read more

We had arranged a two night trip to Tsavo East and West National Parks. Every one was excited about seeing African wildlife. I just wanted too see the place where the man eating lions went on their killing spree from the film The Ghost And The Darkness. We had a bit of a hiccup on the first morning. Even though everything was booked for the weekend the way we wanted it, the contact at the tour company thought it was the following day that we started. We quickly made alternative transport arrangements and off we went… 8 Hours Later we entered Tsavo East National Park already for a safari. At first every one did the classic ‘Oh look every one! There’s an elephant.” Pointing to a spot on the horizon and “What’s that? It’s an impala” ... read more

Hello Everyone, I haven't dropped off the face of the Earth, although it does actually feel like it at times where I currently am. I'm on a small isalnd (Wassini) right on the south east tip of Kenya. We have no electricity (again). They occassionally let me out into town for brief periods. I will be finishing up in about 2 weeks when I hope to continue the blog. Things to look forward to are: Guide On how to Behave Like A Lion Cub Lusaka, Again The Train Journey That Lasted 3 days Dar Es Salam & Mombassa Keep your comments coming, I do appreciate them and only wish I had time to reply to them all. Kenyan Merry-Go-Round My recent trip to Africa (see my last three blogs) weren't inspired by visions of setting off on a safari in the Maasai Mara or mounting a camel in the Egyptian desert. It was a trip that would not have been complete if I hadn't accomplished the one task I had come to Kenya for in the first place: to build a playground. The organization I started in the wake of the tsunami, Operation Playground (OP), was the realization of a dream to build playgrounds for children that had been either effected by a natural disaster, or simply lived in a region of the world that could not afford them a place to play. And so I found myself, once again, online depserately trying to organize my trip to Kenya. Airline Ambassadors International (AAI), ... read more

So yesterday was definetly a busy and adventurous day. The morning I just ran a few errands, one of which was making reservations at a hotel for when my parents come! =) Only 11 more days.. can't wait! A little after 11 I went to the post office and grabbed a Matatu to the ferry. I was going to Shika Adabu (on mainland Mombasa) where Lia was staying to go to a wedding yesterday and today. The matatu ride was only about 10-15 min. Getting on the ferry was really easy, but I felt kind of awkward. I was the only white and got lots and lots of stares. I also heard "Ona, Mzungu!" "look, a white!" quite a bit. Lia met me on the other side and after buying some water we grabbed a Matatu ... read more

Road To Samburu: Archer's Post (Please read the previous blog for Part One) I want to preface this blog with this very little known fact: From a BBC News Excerpt: "Kenya's government has spent more than $12m on new cars since 2002 - enough to send 25,000 children to school for eight years, their report said." Read full story here. The next morning our journey would take us through some of the roughest terrain of our trip. Our new friend and armed guide, Lempei, has informed us of the dangers of passing through this region. There are bandits that litter the countryside and lie in wait for vehicles that are carrying foreigners. Their intent is to rob you, and if needed, they will kill to get what they want. Lempei had instructed us to keep a ... read more
