I have just spent my first night properly camping - the last few nights at the Masai Mara was pretty luxurious, the tents were already put up for us and we had a platform to sleep on. Last night was a different story, we arrived at Kisumu near Lake Victoria and had to endure the trauma of putting up our own tents, the bloody cheek of it. The mosquitoes were the size of jumbo jets, I was absolutely terrified. I drowned myself in 100% DEET and watched and laughed as the mozzies flew into my pasty white legs and died instantly. If anyone is thinking of making a quick trip to Kisumu, bring a burkha.....!... read more

Have just had the most amazing time on safari in the Masai Mara, yes I know you're all well aware where I am, I just had to rub it in again. It's been fantastic, I have seen bucket loads of zebras, gazelles, umpalas, lions, giraffes, elephants and wilderbeast. It is really hot here, but pretty cold at night, and I haven't been brave enough to get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo, even though there was a Masai warrior to escort us, it was still too scary! We went to a Masai village and had their beer, which was actually not as minging as I thought, and I have started shopping already (need another backpack to bring all this stuff) and am incredibly bad at bartering so the Masai women ... read more

Well we've finished our first week of travels and it's certainly been interesting! We're starting to adapt to life here in Kenya- never expect something to come fast and never expect to things to follow your schedule! So far I'm not very happy being in Nairobi but I think that once we get out of here and into the smaller areas it will be better. It's really intimidating constantly feeling like people want to take your money because you're a "rich white person". Masai Mara this weekend was really cool. Although we totally got ripped off on our safari we watched a pride of lions take down a water buffalo right in front of us- which was incredible. It was just like what you would see on National Geographic! The roads on the way to Masai ... read more

We had set off just before sun set. I took a look at the terrain on the way up it was this weird mix of highland plataeu surrounded by mountians and covered by low bush and grass land. There wasn't much out there. On the night drive itself I had decided to actually enjoy the experience rather than just sit there and wait for it too end. As a result I was looking all around, rather than try to get some sleep. In the dark you could see traces of some settlements, the odd building here and there and the occassional lantern in the distance. There were initially 15 other passengers on that truck. Most of them got off at a settlement of some description along the way. Others, however, seemed to get off in the ... read more

We arrived at the hotel at about 7pm, as soon as our bags landed on the floor we left again to try too sort out how to get to Moyale and some food. While wondering around trying to find some where that served chips (I didn't want to eat anything that could potentially upset my stomach) we were approached by some one who started talking to us. My normal course of action is to ignor them, people can see that your lost foreigners and think that your loaded. Mike, however, engaged him in conversation. After dinner we taked about him and decided that it would save alot of hassle on our part if we just let him do the work. I'm not sure if its his real name but he told us it was Carla. The lorry roled into a small, dry, dusty outpost of a town where trucks congregate to form a convoy before heading north to Moyale, as what lay ahead was bandit country and lorries are prone to being raided by Somali's fleeing the fighting in their own country and desperate to get anything they can sell on. This was also the place where they were assigned armed escorts (a guy with a sub-machine gun). If it wasn't for the African people, this could be a hollywood film set for a western. There were 3 blocks of buldings that were made up resteraunts, shops and pubs that had faiding paint and covered in the yellow dust that formed a gritty layer over everything including my clothes, face and hands. The town has about 3 small blocks of shops, ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated my blog in a while. It's not that I was too busy to do it, it's just that there isn't a convenient cyber cafe near the house, so I have to walk about an hour or take a bus into central Nairobi to use the Internet. These last couple of weeks have been going well. School is keeping me fairly busy and watching World Cup, reading, and hanging out with the other volunteers has used up the rest of my time. The students at my school are in the middle of their monthly CAT tests. I got to make and give a test out to my math and business students last week. I finished grading the math tests and the scores were all across the board, from one perfect to three students ... read more

The conversation went something like this... Renay "Sehail, come to Lake Nivasha with us!" After about 1 second I reply with "Okay." Then remember that I had arranged to do the trip to Ethiopia with some one I had met the day before and decided to invite them along."Mike we're going to Nivasha tomorrow." Too which Mike replies "Okay." "Natalie, Renay this is Mike, he'll be coming with us." Hello's all round and it was off at 9 am in the morning. This time I was determined not to come back to Nairobi. I'm not going back. I'm not. I'm not... We catch a mutatu (the Kenyan name for a mini-bus taxi thing) and cramed into the back with all our bags off we go. We get to Nivasha town, about 11km from the place where ... read more

We made it! Wow, it's been quite the adventure so far but we made it and hopefully once we start workign it will get better. No major problems or anything just a really long trip! The place we're staying is ok. Not quite what I expected but it's clean and quiet (so far) and seems to be very safe (it's gated with a 24hr guard) so hopefully it will work out ok. It's run by a british guy and his wife and they've used it the last few years for global vets so I think it will be good. It's certainly different here first impressions are that it seems like there's definitely lots of poverty but the people are very friendly. Jetlag is a major issue as we're dealing with a 7 hour time difference! Well ... read more
