Sun. morning I woke up early said goodbye to my family grabbed my bag and headed off to the office to meet the group. We ended up leaving late 'cause one of the safari vans was late, but nothing here is on time, so it wasn't out of the ordinary. When it came we all climbed in eager to get on the way to Tsavo National Park. The drive up there took several hours. The road for most of the way was paved, but very bad. The vans we were in luckily had good shock absorbers, but it still felt like we were off roading most of the time. The drive was slow and very bumpy. Around noon we finally arrived at the park and had lunch at a resort just outside of the park. It ... read more

We finished our lectures yesterday! =) That was nice. Tomorrow we're leaving for Tsavo national park. I'm soooo excited to see all the animals. Unfortunately though I'm sick. YUCK!!! having a fever (even a slight one) in a place where it's super hot anyway really bites. I'm hoping that I'll be all better by tomorrow, but we'll see. We'll be camping for a night in Tsavo national park and then continue on to Taita. Apparently the roads there are pretty bad. One section of the road should only take 15 min. to pass, but usually takes around 2 hrs. WOW!! I'll tell you if it's true when I get back. This is the last you'll hear from me until I get back to Mombasa at the end of the month. There's no electricity in the villages ... read more

It's rained a good portion of the day today!!! =) It's quite a bit cooler today, which is sooooooo nice. Last night I went to bed early (around 10), but woke up somewhere around 12 cause the power went out (the 3rd time in the past week). I know, when you're asleep a power outage shouldn't make any difference, but it does here in respects to the celing fans. I woke up 'cause I was roasting in the room. It was soooooo hot. I laid there and contemplated going an standing in the dark shower just cause I knew the water would be cool.... it was soooo uncomfortable. Even in the middle of the night it was warm enough to make me sweat buckets. YUCK!!! It took around an hour n' a half before the power ... read more

the mountain was incredible. after much to do, getting clothes washed, getting warmer clothes from the rental people (which in itself is an ordeal) and actaully getting to the base of the mountain...4 hours by matatu on terrible roads. Paul Haym your roads here in kenya didn't last. For those who don't know, my boss back home in Vancouver (unless I've been fired) is from Kenya. He tells me he was the greatest enginer kenya ever had. I persoally think he was the only enginer kenya ever had and after he left they did't bother replacing him. The roads in kenya are terrible, for a place that could just as easliy be a 2nd or even first world country. We stayed the first night in Nanyuki, where we met with our porter and chef. the altitude ... read more

This weekend was sooo nice. =) It was great getting to spend time with my host-family. Sat. the kids all went to Madrasa. My host mom and I went out to get me a cell phone and so she could grab a couple things for her dad before we went out to her parents place. Her parents live in a part of Mombasa known as Bamburi. It's about a 30 min. matatu ride. It was nice to meet her family. Her mom was soooo cute. She didn't speak any english, but had a great time talking with me. hehe... it was quite interesting. I'll definetely have to go back and visit. When we got back home we just relaxed. The evening was spent playing cards. =) We had a blast! Sun. the kids had Madrasa again, ... read more

the safari was awesome. but I say that everytime. The maasai mara is not a game park, but an area of land just north of the serengetti. It is not fenced and the animals wander freely. The land used to belong to the maasai people who are mainly pastoralists, but the government approached them and asked if they could relocate so that tourists can use the area as well. suprisingly they agreed (or were forced to) and today the villages of the maasai are near the mara but not in. the maasai take their cattle to the water sources in the evening and then allow them to grase where ever. On the way to the Maasai mara we saw goats, zebra, giraffe, cows and sheep. The first day we arrived around 4 pm and immedaitly went ... read more

Well, I'm back in Mombasa now. I was really sad to leave Lamu. It's a great town. Sun was a long travel day. Our plane leaving Lamu was delayed 2 hours. Also ran into my first experience with corruption at the Lamu airport. Luckily Ali took care of all the stuff for us. The people there didn't want to let us take all our luggage on the plane saying it was too much. So they wanted Ali to pay em around 7,000 shillings (about $100 bucks). Ali called Athman and Athman said not to pay and that we should just send as much luggage back as they didn't want to let on the plane and we'd just bus it out to Mombasa the following day. When Ali got off the phone he told the guy that ... read more

March 7th, 2006, Day 61 of our cruise of 105 First of 2 sea days We have left Kenya and are heading to the Seychelles Islands The safari was exhausting, thrilling, enriching; a good opportunity to compare a game reserve (in white South Africa) and the great outdoors of the wilds of Africa (we were on a Maasai preserve with no fences to keep the animals from migrating in the interior of black Kenya). Granny, see excursion Maasai Mara page 27 of the excursion book. We slept in a good strong tent with an armed guard; 3 sides of our Mara Safari Club were bordered by the Mara River, the other side by an electric fence. One of the pictures shows our own baby hippo with family on the bank of the Mara River in front ... read more

March 4th, 2006, Day 58 of our cruise of 105 Mombassa Kenya Very, very hot, maybe the hotter than of all our ports We had another wonderful safe day with our 12 friends on a mini bus and another Mohamoud; we were gone from 8 am till 4, walked 5 hours of that in 31 degree C. I wash all our clothes every day in the bath tub. Last night, we went on an expensive ship organized tour to have a cruise on a ship with diner. Nice breeze, althought the Mombassa creek was a tad smelly. Today, we fly out to the Maira Masa and we will be on safari on the fringe of the Serengeti; we are excited about this. I hope you enjoy the pictures Hello my children, hello granny. Ttys, love to ... read more

we made it here, in relative comfort. T the morning we left for kenya we had asked to have our breakfast prepaired early... at 6:30 instead of 7 am. we arrived at 6:15 just to ensure it was all going according to plan. by 7:15 we deicded to leave our complimentary breakfast behind because it was taking forever to make 2 boiled eggs 2 pieces of plain white bread (not even toasted) and a banana and tea. we arrive at the bus terminal with some time to spare (about 5 minutes) so I grabbed a fantastic to go brekafsat for paul and I and we boarded the bus. lo and behold....... the bus left on time, even 10 seconds early. paul witnessed a crazed man talking about killing bush and praising saddam. we know he was ... read more
