We finished our lectures yesterday! =) That was nice. Tomorrow we're leaving for Tsavo national park. I'm soooo excited to see all the animals. Unfortunately though I'm sick. YUCK!!! having a fever (even a slight one) in a place where it's super hot anyway really bites. I'm hoping that I'll be all better by tomorrow, but we'll see. We'll be camping for a night in Tsavo national park and then continue on to Taita. Apparently the roads there are pretty bad. One section of the road should only take 15 min. to pass, but usually takes around 2 hrs. WOW!! I'll tell you if it's true when I get back. This is the last you'll hear from me until I get back to Mombasa at the end of the month. There's no electricity in the villages ... read more

the mountain was incredible. after much to do, getting clothes washed, getting warmer clothes from the rental people (which in itself is an ordeal) and actaully getting to the base of the mountain...4 hours by matatu on terrible roads. Paul Haym your roads here in kenya didn't last. For those who don't know, my boss back home in Vancouver (unless I've been fired) is from Kenya. He tells me he was the greatest enginer kenya ever had. I persoally think he was the only enginer kenya ever had and after he left they did't bother replacing him. The roads in kenya are terrible, for a place that could just as easliy be a 2nd or even first world country. the safari was awesome. but I say that everytime. The maasai mara is not a game park, but an area of land just north of the serengetti. It is not fenced and the animals wander freely. The land used to belong to the maasai people who are mainly pastoralists, but the government approached them and asked if they could relocate so that tourists can use the area as well. suprisingly they agreed (or were forced to) and today the villages of the maasai are near the mara but not in. the maasai take their cattle to the water sources in the evening and then allow them to grase where ever. March 7th, 2006, Day 61 of our cruise of 105 First of 2 sea days We have left Kenya and are heading to the Seychelles Islands The safari was exhausting, thrilling, enriching; a good opportunity to compare a game reserve (in white South Africa) and the great outdoors of the wilds of Africa (we were on a Maasai preserve with no fences to keep the animals from migrating in the interior of black Kenya). We slept in a good strong tent with an armed guard; 3 sides of our Mara Safari Club were bordered by the Mara River, the other side by an electric fence. we made it here, in relative comfort. T the morning we left for kenya we had asked to have our breakfast prepaired early... at 6:30 instead of 7 am. we arrived at 6:15 just to ensure it was all going according to plan. by 7:15 we deicded to leave our complimentary breakfast behind because it was taking forever to make 2 boiled eggs 2 pieces of plain white bread (not even toasted) and a banana and tea. we arrive at the bus terminal with some time to spare (about 5 minutes) so I grabbed a fantastic to go brekafsat for paul and I and we boarded the bus. lo and behold....... the bus left on time, even 10 seconds early. paul witnessed a crazed man talking about killing bush and praising saddam. we know he was ... read more
