We arrived safely after one hell of a journey with Peter Smith keeping us on our toes by booking a connecting flight 2 hours after landing in Jo'burg-trying to gear us up for the year ahead 'ey Pete?! There were a few tense moments as our flight out of Heathrow was an hour delayed! We also got stuck at immigration behind 2 illegals who had no chance of getting in! This added with confusion over whether our bags had gone straight to Kenya or not resulted in us recreating the scene from Home Alone when they realised they've lost Kevin-lots of running with heavy backpacks while Becs attempted to give Indian Head massages with her healing hands to lower the pressure... didnt work but nice try Green! Jo Whit spied the receptionist from AXA at Heathrow ... read more

After 10 hour bus ride from Kampala, we landed in Nakuru, Flamingo Capital of East Africa. Early next morning, we took a game drive into Lake Nakuru National Park. We expected to see lot of flamingoes, but we were flabbergasted by what we saw. When we arrived at the Lake shore, there were millions of Pink Flamingoes and White Pelicans. For both Alison and I, the sheer volume of the birds in the lake and the spectacular fashion in which the birds they moved was breath taking. We drove around the lake and saw several Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras, Gazelles etc. Once again, we were unlucky not to see any lions ! But, the Flamingoes have been the most amazing sight so far on this trip. Next, we headed to Naru Moru, the base for trekking up ... read more

Jambo our friends! Well we had another fabulous day on Safaris. Today we saw some lion cubs that were less than a month old. They played and had fun about 15 feet from our van. They were a joy! This afternoon we had another experience of a lifetime. We visited a real Samburu villiage outside of the reserve. We were greeted by the chief. The women greeted us with a tribal dance. We danced with them and talked with them and had a moment to enjoy their children with them. For a people who have nothing, they showed us a great deal of joy. We dropped off some school supplies for their new school and we learned a great deal about their lives and their day to day struggles with survival amid a 2 year drought. ... read more

Jambo again from Samburu Well we had 2 more game drives today and a nature walk and just had another amazing day! We saw a herd of elephants, more lions, baboons, water buffalo, giraffes, cheetah, camels and many many birds and small animals. We apologise, but we are having a great deal of difficulty downloading pictures. We may try again later, but for now, it takes too long. Good Night and talk again soon! -Julie & Karl ... read more

Jambo friends and family! We made it! We are really in Africa, after 19 hours of travel. 31 hours Karl was awake straight. We landed in Nairobi (nothing to write home about) got up early this morning and headed on north to Samburu. We crossed the Equator from the southern hemisphere, back to the northern hemisphere. We arrived at our lodge (which, by the way, is gorgeous) and headed out on safari (the real thing) an hour later. It was amazing, we had been in the reserve about 3 minutes when we saw Ostriches in the wild. We saw many beautiful birds, antelope, impalas (deer like, with straight horns) and a bunch of others we do not remember the names of. (but we will learn, and will be able to recite them for you when we ... read more

After crossing the border into Kenya, we arranged to catch the first lorry heading south towards Nairobi. We paid before actually seeing the vehicle. That was our first mistake. The truck that soon stopped in front of us had 20 cows crammed in the bed and a skeleton roof of thin metal bars that criss-crossed above the cattle. We climbed atop the steel frame, secured our backpacks and butts as much as possible, and let our feet dangle down among cow horns and backs. We were joined by a soldier armed with an AK-47 for the truck's protection against shiftas (bandits), a cattle wrestler whose job it was to coax fallen cows to stand up by twisting their tails, and a boy who collected the money from locals catching rides from village to village. At 10am ... read more

Hello. Today we watched the sun rise over Mt. Kilimanjaro (means mountain of snow). At over 19,000 feet high it dominates the landscape and is beautiful. We couldn't see it yesterday afternoon because of the clouds so we were very happy to see it at 6:30 this morning. We are in Amboseli park and we have seen lions, elephants, giraffes, wildebeasts, hyenas, gazelles etc. There are no leopards here anymore because all of the trees are dying. They are being killed by the long horned beatle. They drill hundreds of holes in the wood and then the tree crumbles. Its a very sad sight to see... trees lyiing down all over the place. For some reason they don't care too much for the palm trees. It was very interesting to watch the animals late yesterday ... read more
