What an amazingly fun, interesting and busy weekend it's been. The wedding on Fri. night was good. This ceremony was for the female family and friends of the groom. The dresses women wore were a lot more elaborate than the 1st wedding I went to. They were so sparkly. The women all sat around the dance floot, some in chairs most on the mats on the floor. They played a lot of Swahili music and women got up and danced. Yep, and I joined em. Dancing at a wedding is easy and pretty boring. The women kind of shuffle around in a circle and move their hips. That's it, but they have a great time singing along with the music. A cousin of the groom who had recently been married was there and they sat her ... read more

Road To Samburu For most of my adult life I have dreamed of being in Africa. As an avid photographer I have dreamed of capturing the images of a part of the world that has been visted by few. And so my dream has come true, but has left me with more than just photo images. It has left me with a deep understanding of how the reality of poverty can hit you between the eyes. No longer can I sit idle in the comfort of my home in America knowing of what is going on in some of the deepest parts of the Kenyan north country. Travis Mitchell, my good friend who was with me in Thailand to build the playground on Kho Ko Khao island, has once again traveled across the globe to meet ... read more

Yesterday was a fabulous day! We woke up early and headed off to Chumbe Island at 8am. We caught our boat and headed out to the island. It was amazing. Chumbe Island isn't too far off the Island of Zanzibar and is the location of Chumbe National Marine Park. There's a beautiful coral reef off the shores of Chumbe. When we got there we were all astounded again by the beauty here. The ocean had some amazing colors. Nobody lives on the island (there's just a small tourist resort). We had about 2 hours worth of lecture about the island and the conservation effort and the importance of eco-tourism. It was pretty interested, but not what we all wanted to do with a lot of sun and a white beach near by. After the lecture we ... read more

The Marine and Wildlife Research and Community Development in East Africa. I had actually managed to make it across Africa, overland in 7 days and join the expedition on time. Next up was the trip back down to Shimoni right in the South East corner of Kenya. In other words back the way I had come a couple of days before!!! The journey took about 2 and a ½ hours. During which time I realised that I had lost my trusty fleece (which had doubled up as a pillow on more than one occasion), about 30 GBP and a sudoku book that I had been using to keep my mind busy. Damn. We got to Shimoni and started to prepare for Mkwiro village on Wassini Island, the place where we would be living for the next ... read more

The coach trip was uneventful until Tanga right in the North East of Tanzania. After a break for food and other things we set of. I had been warned that the road was bumpy. What people forgot to mention that it’s not actually a road like we know it. It wasn’t tarmaced. I was asleep until this point. The road was so bumpy it was like receiving a spine shattering massage, for two hours straight. Then at the Kenyan border I started to feel the effects of dehydration sickness kick in. As I was looking for water the bus decided t leave without me and I think I found myself running the fastest I had ever run shouting the loudest I have ever shouted. Fortunately I wasn’t the only one and the bus stopped 100 meters ... read more

Unfortunately this is where our African journey ends. For our final blog we decided to throw together a bit of Hellotrain miscellany. From the buoyant waters of the Dead Sea to the baboon-blanketed slopes of the Simien Mountains; from Jenny getting attacked by a monkey on a leash to Randy getting attacked by a sewer grate; from awful falafel in Egypt to mouth-watering matoke in Uganda…We saw a lot of places and did a lot of stuff. Countries Visited: Turkey - Egypt - Jordan - Ethiopia - Kenya - Tanzania - Uganda - Rwanda - DR Congo Days Traveled: 170 (just shy of 6 months) Dollars Spent: about $5000 each, including plane tickets # of Times Jenny Locked Herself in the Bathroom: 4 # of Times Randy Bumped His Head: too many to remember Confrontations with ... read more

Bangkok to Nairobi The task of getting to Kenya has been nothing less than difficult. My flight from Bangkok to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was a trip within itself. The aircraft was jam-packed and not your usual trip as in the United States. I found myself captured within a fuselage of ethnicities from all points of Africa. Next to me sat a rotund gentleman from Tanzania, a lawyer and businessman. The flight left Bangkok just after midnight, but you wouldn't believe the activity during flight. There were those wandering up and down the aisles chatting with other passengers, and in the distance I could hear the music from MPG and CD players. Some even had their mini DVD players blasting movies with no regard to the comfort of others near them. I'll call it an airborne social ... read more

A little after noon we left the park and headed into Voi. We ater our packed lunches at a gas station/ rest stop. Anne, Ruben (our teachers), our food and other supplies joined us there. We then clombed back into the vans and began our way inot the Taita hills for our week village stay. We got rained on on our way up. It was so peaceful I ended up falling asleep. When I awoke it appeared our vans had been teleported to Costa Rica. The hills/mountains we were climbinb were so green and trees were everywhere. The only ones I recognized were the banana trees. The hillsides were covered in terraced farms that reminded me of Nepal and scattered houses. It didn't take us long to arriave at the site of the clinic we were ... read more
