Salzburg and some landscape around it
I can't take credit for any of these pictures (from Salzburg) because Dan took all of them. Just had to mention that. I think I had run out of batteries or forgotten my camera or something, so Dan took pictures for all of us, which was nice. Wow, I just realized that I never wrote about my trip to Salzburg. At least, I don't think I did. I went there back at the beginning of September, so I won't remember all the details. But I should write it down before I forget even more than I have!
I was accompanied by my friends Mike, Daniel, and Katie. We left on a Friday afternoon and got back on Sunday. The city of Salzburg isn't that big, so we managed to see quite a bit of it. The first night we were there (Friday) we only had time to find a youth hostel and eat dinner at a small, very friendly and homey restaurant. Our hostel was on the side of a mountain that was this really cute country house run by a lady who had a bunch of pictures of what was probably her family on the wall. So it was just like staying over in someone's house.
Salzburg is beautiful - it is full of fountains, churches, gardens, etc. So, no plans are needed - just go without an itinerary, and you are bound to walk past a bunch of things that will make you stop
The Dom
This is where Mozart was baptized and say, "oooooh!"
On Saturday we went to Mozart's birthhouse, of course, and saw locks of his hair and his crib and other Mozart-y things. I am definitely being bombarded by Mozart this semester! It's great. 😊 We also went to the big Salzburg fortress on top of a mountain. We walked all the way up and took a tour of the fortress and got amazing views of the city. We took a tram down the train, which was fun - it was included in the price of going to the fortress. We spent the rest of the day wandering through the various markets, the historical sights, and sitting and talking by the river - as it was still only the beginning of the semester, we all didn't know each other that well yet, so I felt like I knew them a lot better after this trip.
The next day we rushed to get the train into town so that we could go to Mass in the biggest church in town, known simply as Dom. They were playing one of Mozart's masses for the service, and we had wanted to go to a concert of some kind anyway,
so we decided to take advantage! Hearing music in a cathedral (and the cathedral that Mozart was BAPTIZED in, nonetheless!) is one of those things that I will never get tired of. It also happened to be Erddankfest, on which the people of Salzburg go to mass in a special parade to give thanks to God for the harvest - similar to Thanksgiving.
We met some cool Australians that night who were staying in the room next to ours, and we shared the same balcony, so we talked to them and commemorated The Crocodile Hunter's passing with them 😊 They're from Melbourne, so they got bombarded with dumb American questions that we had about Australia, but I don't think they minded.
On Sunday, after the mass, we went to a big science museum, with a whole bunch of random exhibits, including a dinosaur exhibit, an aquarium, a planetarium, etc... it was really big, and we spent at least three hours in there. And it only cost about two euros.
Anyway, that pretty much sums up the Salzburg trip. I will give you some visual stimulation now.
