Museum Day in Stockholm

The Stockholm Card provides free transit on the city system so we used the buses, subways and trams to get to our destination. All in all it worked quite smoothly.

Our first stop was Skansen where 5 centuries of Swedish history can be viewed. There are over 150 buildings on 75 acres and represents all cultures from the north to the south. Thankfully the weather has cooperated today although it is still quite warm. It seems a bit cooler this evening.

Upon leaving the Skansen museum we walked past the ABBA Museum. This was not included in our Stockholm Pass so we declined entering. Interestingly, according to what we have heard, the ABBA group is the third largest grossing artistic talent following the Beatles and Elvis.

As we walked along the waterfront we passed by a boat museum which happened to have free admission today. It was interesting to see all the wooden boats on display.

The Museum of Spirits turned out to be quite different than we expected. There was a section dealing with Absolut Vodka which is produced in Sweden. There were 2 additional exhibits - one on various rock artists, the other about the permissive attitudes of Sweden during the 50's and 60's and how the world viewed that permissiveness.

Our last major stop for the day was the Vasa Museum. On August 10, 1628 the ship set sail on her maiden voyage and sank in the Stockholm harbour. In 1961 the boat was salvaged and the boat in the museum is 98% original. Many artifacts were recovered fro the vessel which offered insight into 17th century Sweden.

We walked past the Norse Museum on our way back but decided we had done enough for the day.
