Nuit St Georges
The town centre After yesterday’s excitement of the canals and the Tour de France we were ready for new experiences. But we were exhausted from the canal walk and the 200 kilometre race from Troyes to Nuit St Georges so we decided on a slow start today. The sky has clouded over but still very hot. Thunderstorms are forecast for later in the day. The farmers are very busy in the district getting their wheat harvested. We decide to go exploring, this time to Nuit St Georges. The Tour de France leaves from a different location so the town will be empty when we arrive.
We decide not to mention the third test between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions. There are two reasons for this. First the TV channel decided to scramble its signal just as the game was about to start, and secondly it wax a draw. Both teams would have wanted a win but perhaps a drawn series was a fair reflection of the overall results.
We have a late breakfast so lunch is just a word today. Jane wasn’t interested in our afternoon outing so we left her behind. Not far from our little village

The Tour de France podium the next day. is the village of Mercueil. We are not sure what is there so time for a meander. It doesn’t take long and we are through and other the other side. Meandering can be a bit disconcerting because you end up in quite a different place and direction to the way you thought you should travelling. Because we’re meandering we soon identify familiar surroundings. We glance at the GPS map and notice we are no longer on a road but somewhere in the middle of a field. Just as well Jane is resting up at the apartment. If she was with us she would be stressing out.
Soon we are travelling towards Nuit St Georges. All along the road are cut out shapes of cyclists, bicycles, ribbons, flags, messages and balloons. It is obvious the Tour de France came this way. Nuit St Georges looked as though it was suffering from a party hangover. Perhaps the local council workers will be around on Monday for the big clean up ready for next Friday’s celebrations. Bastille Day will be party time all over France. This year we’ll miss it.
Nuit St Georges is the centre of the wine growing area

Post race celebrations get out of control. nearby. The town has many outlets representing the various vineyards. We wander a while but decide to move on. The sky is getting quite heavy with cloud. On our way back to Beaune we detour to the village of Aloxe-Corton. Previous travellers have mentioned the wine from this village and how it features in an episode of the Fawlty Towers TV programme. Perhaps we’ll check the name at Mr Leclerc’s.
Tonight we decide on a nice meal in Beaune. On arrival, many of the restaurants are busy but we find one that has some tables available. The interior has a great atmosphere. We start with a glass of local wine for one and a local craft beer for the other. We believe in sampling local. Then comes the menu. We both choose a beef dish. Must have some red meat sometimes on the trip. The prices are quite reasonable. One dish is a Simmental beef kebab, the other is a Charolais beef dish called Tartare de Boeuf. The dishes arrive. Surprise! Readers will need to check with Google for a full description of this dish. Needless to say fellow patron’s eyes popped. Like a good Kiwi bloke it was

One of many road side displays all taken in his stride. Patrons at nearby tables were waiting for a reaction. They were disappointed. The dish was tender and tasty, unlike the kebab. We leave the restaurant and wander back to the car. Most of the talk was about “that dish” and how important it is to try new experiences. This was certainly a new experience. Ill effects? No. Have the dish again? Not sure.
Back at the apartment we settled down for the night only to be jolted back to life with the flash of lightning and the roll of thunder. The lightning directly overhead made it feel as if the whole building would explode. The wind started and the shutters need securing. It is going to be some night. We hope it clears the air and tomorrow is a beautiful day. We have a market to visit.
