Hello my fellow travellers!
I landed early this morning at 2 a.m after an overlay in Istanbul which was the cheapest flight to get to Dubai. I must admit that when I booked the flight I was a bit hesitant to book a flight that would have me landing in the middle of the night but things was nice and calm and it felt very safe here. Nothing was open at this time of course so I just browsed the area for a while, checking out a couple of the mosques around the airport, before I made my way into the city.
My first goal was the massive Dubai Mall so I took the bus to the newly constructed metro to it, the bus was interesting as it had a separate area that was only allowed for women and children. The metro was really comfortable and runs through all the major sights in Dubai. Dubai Mall is really amazing and unlike anything you can find here in Sweden, a Mecca of commerce. It even has a huge aquarium, the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, hosted inside it and you get a beautiful view of it even without going into
the actual zoo.
In addition to the zoo there is also massive artworks, a huge food court and of course an ice rink. It was very fascinating to just wander around in here, going to the mall has a completely different meaning after being to place like this.
After just wandering around inside the mall for a while and eating at the food court I decided to step outside and witness the marvel of engineering,
Burj Khalifa, which is currently the world's tallest structure at 829.8 metres.
Beneath
Burj Khalifa lies an artificial lake and the
Souk Al Bahar with it's beautiful bridge. The area is really lovely, albeit a bit crowded, and it's nice to just walk around it despite the heat. Dubai Mall and
Burj Khalifa are most certainly worth a visit while you're in Dubai.
Next I decided to go to the Palm Jumeirah, a series of artificial islands that takes the shape of a palm into the gulf. It was developed by a governmental owned corporation called Nakheel, which means Palm. There has been some controversy around this development since surveys say that it's slowly sinking into the sea, something that is
vigorously refuted by Nakheel. There were originally supposed to be three developments like this, Palm Deira and Palm Jebel Ali being the other two. Due to a slower real estate market the other two aren't completed though.
It is a beautiful development though and I really hope it all works out well, I enjoyed walking around in the area and I also went down to the Dubai Marina that's located nearby and I also took a peek at the mosque
Masjid Mohammed bin Ahmed Almulla. While I sat down resting at a bench, being pretty tired from travelling through the night, I found a Gold Card so I went into a nearby business and had them contact the local authorities to find the owner. I was asked to remain which I did for a while but when no one showed up I eventually left, I hope the card found it's way to the right owner.
After walking around in the marina I started walking along the waterfront until I reached the Jumeirah beach where I sat down and rested for the rest of the evening, enjoying the sunset while talking to a nice gentleman from Saudi Arabia who
had spent some time in Sweden.
Once the sun had set I walked around Dubai and enjoyed the colourful lights that shines up the night sky of the city, I was pretty tired by now though so I made my way over to Ramy's home, he was a bit delayed so I pretty much fell asleep in a chair in the lobby with a smiling security guard watching over me until Ramy came and woke me up. We went up to his apartment and chatted briefly and he watched a football game before going to bed, unfortunately it went badly for his team so he was not in the best mood. I got woken up in the early morning again as well for Ramy's morning prayer so my energy for tomorrow feels pretty low.
Tomorrow I will go to the fort
Al Fahidi from 1787, which now hosts the Dubai Museum, and the
Al Bastakiya, a historical district.
Until tomorrow I wish you all peace and happy travels!

But, but, but....
But that is my photo! I took a somewhat similar photo when I was in Dubai a few years ago. It's not identical but similar in style. Take a look at it (www.travelblog.org/Middle-East/United-Arab-Emirates/Dubai/blog-555600.html) if you are interested. /Ake
