Off to the Perigord area of France

We were up early today to drive to the Perigord Noir, an area along the Dordogne River known for scenic chateaux and villages. We drove to La Roque-Gageac, where we had a coffee beside the river. This lovely little village is built into the cliffs along the river, and is a tourist favourite. The river is alive with canoes and kayaks, and this is something we have been wanting to do. We headed upstream to the village of Vitrac, where we were outfitted with our individual kayaks, and headed off for our 16 km float down the gentle Dordogne. After about an hour we stopped for a picnic lunch along the riverbank. Continuing on, we passed a number of beautiful chateaux. After a couple of hours we again passed La Roque-Gageac, which was even more scenic when viewed from the river. Eventually, we came to Beynac, with its magnificent Chateaux de Beynac high on the cliffs above the river. A short way past Beynac, we reached our destination, from which we were transported back to the starting point at Vitrac. A beautiful but exhausting afternoon. We stopped for a quick pizza and glass of wine, before continuing on to our hotel, Chateau de Monrecour, just west of Beynac. A lovely old chateau built around the turn of the 20th century.
