If you enjoy the sensation of being unpredictably pierced in the ear drum by 1000 decibals of excessive, misplaced, arbitary, elevator music midway through a low-key informative narrative then the Beunos Aries yellow bus might be for you! Okay, so the audio tour on todays sightseeing bus wasnt the greatest, but opting to use our full day here in Buenos Aries to get around by open top bus allowed us to see a huge amount of the city. It cost under $60AUD for both of us, and we managed to get completely around both the yellow and blue bus circuits, as well as jump off at a few places. I cant imagine we could have seen as much any other way.The buses ran 9am-8pm around about 30 stops on both routes every 20 minutes. The buses werent in great nick, seats damaged, headsets broken, miscellaneous stains apparent and broken seatbelts. In the rare occasion that the headset plugs and audio guide did work, it would at times, drop out mid sentence, reset, change language, change volume or just break out into a musical jam session. Songs didnt neccessarily start at the beginning.
Ultimately though this was a great way to
get some sun, see the majority of the city with limited time, and get some photos. We passed through a variety of landmarks, neighborhoods and contrasting areas. Some a great deal more picturesque and pretty than others. We jumped off the bus at a few places along the way, first by the stadium of Boca Juniors, then by the Pacifica Shopping Mall. We made a McDonalds stop here at the largest McDonalds Iv ever seen anywhere in the world. It was well furnished and elaborate but still a ways from Western standards with food quality. Whilst there was still plenty of impressive architecture and craftsmanship throughout the town, it was often a bit delapitated, plain, grey and dreary. The city is surrounded by seemingly endless parks and greenery, plenty of people out and about enjoying the weekend sunshine. There were plenty playing sports, enjoying a jog, or wandering through markets, food and music festivals and stalls in the area.
Our main stop for the afternoon was the zoo. In lieu of any essentiql remarkable landmarks, we opted to see some animals. $15AUD entry each, and good value there. Most of the animals seemed happy and exhibits decent in size. Two animals
of note seemed to roam the zoo free range... Maras (rabbit-kangaroo-deer hybrids) and a weird little beaver gopher thing with webbed feet called a Nutria. There were a few weird and different animals here, some strange bears and the worlds largest rodent, the Cabybara.
From the zoo, we jumped on the blue route bus, most memorable for driving past River Plate football stadium, much grander than Boca Juniors. With that done, we returned by bus to our original stop. Here, some international festival was underway where we wandered a time before returning to the hotel.Dinner tonight was a 10 minute walk down the road to a recommended steak house. Well reviewed, the steaks here were pretty decent without being amazing. Another 6-7/10 type affair. I loved the mustard sauce, and Nats came with peppers and onions. We also had a tasty chorizo, or standard sausage. I managed to tackle a litre bottle of Quilmes, and we strolled back home for around $40AUD for both of us.
