Vaminos! A boat was waiting to take us from our cruise ship to Las Caletas Hideaway. This was once the private home of the famous film director John Hudson. Today, its a remote exclusive tropical beach hideaway, only accessible by boat. From start to finish, this was to be one of the best tours of our entire trip. We left around 8.30am. Transportation by boat took almost an hour, the journey being part of the experience. Finally, our destination draws near before us. Sandy beaches, palms, hammocks, huts, standing out against a steep jungle-clad backdrop of tropical rainforest, nestled in an isolated cove. Theres nothing for miles around, just the ocean, pelicans bobbing in the gentle swell of the waves, a warm breeze and the seemingly endless thick jungle beyond.
We got a warm welcome on the island. Dancers, music, a photo. The great thing about Las Caletas, is that everything is included. An open bar, activities and a buffet lunch. First up, we find a good spot, a secluded couple of deck chairs right on the sand, touched by breaking waves on the beach. We swim a while, just enjoying the picture perfect scenery of our location. Words dont
really do it justice, a really inspired tropical paradise. Before long, we decide to upgrade our beach experience. Why swim when you can snorkel? We grab some flippers and snorkels and paddle out from the beach. Its just a beach right? How much could there be to see? I was skeptical. How wrong I was. There was plenty too see! Countless bright tropical fish; yellow, blue, green, big, small, we even saw an eel hiding among the rocks. Someone was also kind enough to hand me a sea urchin he found below the waves. In time, a small yellow fish, 'Speckle' befriended me, following me, swimming just below my goggles all over the beach. We swam a couple hours before returning to the beach for a couple of cocktails, Mai Tais and Tequila Sunrises. We've been going easy on alcohol lately, but the price and setting was too good to refuse!
Lunchtime, and what a lunch! A Mexican fiesta buffet! All you could eat ribs, tacos, salad, fish, roasted cactus leaves and peppers. One pepper in particular, more spice than I could handle. Whew! Cocktails went well with lunch, followed by desert and delicious coffee. So with an hour left in
our hideaway in paradise, what could we do, what could make it a perfect day? Why animals, of course. After lunch we got the pleasure of meeting some parrots, a monkey and giant snake. Not just meeting, but holding. Awesome.
Sadly, after around 4 or 5 hours in paradise, it was time to leave and head back on the boat towards our cruise ship. Refreshments, a beautiful view and music helped make it a fun trip back. We were in for a treat here though, we couldn't believe our luck. Mexican Kiss! A surprise, live and 4% authentic concert! Most excellent!
By the time we were sailing away from Puerto Vallarta (a pretty city in itself), we were exhausted. We elected to catch a couple hours sleep before dinner. We had a dinner date at Cagneys Steakhouse, an exclusive restaurant with our new friends Ed and Leanne. We would be celebrating Eds birthday and our 6 month anniversary (for tomorrow) since we left Australia. Wed agreed to share a bottle of wine, but after all todays cocktails, a glass was more than enough. Dinner was delicious, more than enough food. We practically rolled to tonights show at the theatre to see some
gymnasts. Tomorrow, our last stop in Mexico is Cabo San Lucas!
