A stroll around medieval Dubrovnik

We caught the shuttle bus from the pier to Pile Square just outside the impressive city walls which run all around the city. Once through the old gate you are in a clean attractive medieval street paved with marble and lined with lovely old buildings. The main thoroughfare is the Stradun, which has the Onofriou Fountain at its top end. This is no longer working but is still a nice piece of architecture. We paid a few Kuna to get in the Baptistery of St John but this is only one small Roman room containing one statue of St.John. The Old Pharmacy and the Cloisters are worth a visit as they contain some good Renaissance art and the 3 cathedrals are easy to pop into in a stroll around the streets as it is only a small city. Some of the shops will take euros but entrance fees and cafes only accept Kuna, which originally meant "Animal skin" at a time when the only way of buying anything was through bartering with goods. We stopped for the inevitable beer and found the people to be very courteous. We could see the city walls and thought we could get up to them and spent quite some time walking up and down the narrow back streets by the houses beneath the walls but only later did we find that there is one way up onto the walls by the main city gates and this costs yet more Kuna. It started to pour it down with rain so we opted out of the wall walk and headed back to our ship.

This is not a cathedral. It is St Blaise Church in the old town of Dubrovnik.
