Today we had to leave Sicily and fly back to Rome for our last five days. Sicily has been great, rustic, dry and a little bit dirty, with brilliant food and wine.

The hotel owner drove us the 45 minutes or so to the Palermo airport. At one stage I noticed the speedo at 160km/hr, it was a quick trip. We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare!

We were taking an Alitalia flight to Rome which was delayed an hour. G and I waited patiently in an orderly manner in the line to board. The minute the boarding notice came up, the Sicilians all pushed into the priority cue and somehow managed to board. Looking back at the remaining cue I don't think there were any Italians in it. Something to do with the protection money I had been hearing about in Sicily. Obviously we don't pay it.

The flight was less than an hour and we were back in Rome for a few days shopping. Gabriele met us at our two bedroom apartment in Trastevere, an area of Rome we haven't stayed before but full of restaurants. Should be fun. By the way, Gabriele was absolutely gorgeous and we didn't really hear much of the instruction he was giving us. I have his mobile number now so will most likely send him random late night text messages from Perth to keep in touch.

We dumped the bags and then wandered a little through Trastevere. G had on her new 6 inch wedges so we didn't get very far on the cobblestones.

In Russilon, France G bought a print and had it signed by the artist, a lovely lady who was very keen to chat. She was intrigued we, two ladies, were going to Sicily on our own as it is dangerous. She recommended a book about a man's childhood in Sicily. In Trastevere tonight we visited a tiny secondhand bookstore and G spotted it immediately on the shelf, in English, in the rare editions section. It will now be held in G's bookcase.

We had a very nice meal right next to our apartment (saltimbocca and chianti) and called it a night. The apartment has two double rooms so I finally get to sleep in a double bed!! Big day of shopping tomorrow.
