UNI family reunion
Janey and Grandpa Jack at our teacher dinner London… sigh. But I should probably start from the beginning. The end of September Janey, my UNI coordinator and her husband Jack came to observe AO and I teach along with some other student teachers in Germany. They were here for a few days, and we went out to dinner with our teachers and supervisors ect. from here. It was very nice, and wonderful to spend time with Janey and grandpa Jack. Before they moved on to their next stop, they took AO and I to Rothenberg ob Trauber, a very cool walled city not too far from here. We spent a few hours there and then they moved on. AO and I stayed and took the train home. The city was wonderful, very pretty with lots of shops and a beautiful little park. Its up in the mountains and was a neato village.
Other than that, I’ve been full time teaching for a while now, and am starting to give Carol back some subjects in the classroom. It’s sad! But we’ll not talk about that. We’ve been hanging out with Grace a little, and went downtown with her one night. The girls at the apartment were quite funny, and
apparently I am a stealthy ghost, or they were really drunk. I vote the latter, but still humorous. Oh, other important Grace news to share, AO, Grace, and I got tickets to go to Scotland over thanksgiving break!! We are trying to talk roommate Michelle into going with as well. I’m pretty excited. AO has a friend there that we are going to try and hook up with. Oh man, Scotland in November!
So, the most exciting news to share is about London! We had a long weekend for Columbus Day and planned a while ago to visit AO’s some sort of relative in Windsor. Ended up her aunt was going to be there to, so a regular Ohlert family reunion in London! We had some issues getting to London, like missing (but not) shuttle busses downtown. And we had to take a train to Frankfurt, which is a huge airport. We ended up getting on a standby flight since we were there a little early due to a mishap with train tickets. (We took a fast train and we shouldn’t have. Oh well!) But then sat on the runway for like an hour. We were split up, but
Tea party with a real tea pot!
Diana had a cool tea pot that was from the castle, so we had to have a tea party in England! I sat by a cool British guy that was excellent and talked my ear off the whole flight. We were landing, you know slow downwardness, and all the sudden the plane was like jerked up and we were soaring way up in the sky. My heart was also soaring right to my toes. It was pretty scary, and took the pilot a while to tell us that the plane in front of us didn’t stop fast enough so we had to “change flight path.” Yipes. Anyway got into London, took a cab to Windsor and hung out with Diana and Rob and Dorothy. They were wonderful! They took care of us and gave us food and showed us around. Dianna was full of tips and things to see. Plus she gave us maps! AO and I worked public transportation from Paddington Station and took the tube and double decker busses all over town. So cool. We spent Friday in London, the morning with Dorothy and Dianna and went to Shakespears’ Globe Theater that night to see A Comedy of Errors. It was a wonderful play, despite the fact that we had to stand for three hours, after walking London all
Globe!
Thats right, thats me in the Globe theater. That is approximately where we stood for the play. Which was amazing. day! But soo excellent, I can’t even put it into words. Saturday morning AO and I got up and ventured downtown by ourselves to see more stuff.
A list of what we saw:
- Tower of London- took a tour from a Beefeater. We got to see the crown jewels and a guard in a fuzzy hat and the tower, which is not a tower but a fortification thing.
- A boat ride down the Thymes River, which now has fish! Got to see the bridges and other cool stuff from a boat.
- Parliament and Big Ben (which is actually the bell, not the tower). Imagine walking down the street, seeing these things, and suddenly Big Ben starts to ring. Blew me away!
- Westminster Abbey, which was only moderately impressive. Went inside it on Saturday for Evensongs, and it was only okay. Seemed a little segregated. But I digress.
- Buckingham Palace and the awesomely pretty gardens that surround it.
- St. Paul’s Cathedral- so beautiful inside and out. Lots of gold and excellent stained glass.
- The Globe Theater (see above rant)
- The Dali exhibit. He was one eccentric dude. Got to see his sculptures
Big Ben and Parliment
Wow, London. and just look at those skies. How did it not rain when we were in London? and sketches. Lots of random stuff but got to see a stature of The Persistence of Memory, Mae West’s lips (the couch), and the lobster phone!! Plus some of Picasso’s lesser works.
- Harrods the giantest department store ever. There was an Egyptian escalator and a real life opera singer just chillin in there.
- Lunch in Trafalgar square plus a little frisbee. And cool lion statues.
- A hunt for cookies that ended successfully.
We hung out at Diana’s on Saturday night and ate some yummy food with them, had a tea party in England! And played some pinochle. I hope we can find some people to play with us so I don’t forget. Traveled all day on Sunday, and walked around Windsor a little before leaving. Flights were pretty decent and the train was okay too. Worked on some homework and relaxed from a busy weekend!
It’s almost my last week in first-grade, and it’s pretty sad. I will really miss Carol and the kiddos. I’m not even sure they know I’m leaving. We should tell them. Tomorrow Carol is gone, so I have a sub and will be the teacher all day. I’m not worried at
Buckingham Palace
the gardens were super pretty around the palace, and we were there at dusk. all. This weekend is hanging out around H-berg, and hopefully actually going to the castle! I miss everyone at home, but continue to have a blast in Europe. P.S the weather here is wonderful, and hopefully it’ll stay that way for a while since we have to walk to school, and everywhere else! Love!
