Woke up to another cloudless pleasant brochure morning and headed for Homer, Alaska
We met a young couple who have been at this campsite for almost a year. He's in the military and they're waiting to buy a house. He said the hardest thing about living in Alaska is the four hours of daylight in the winter. Said you have to have a hobby or you'll go goofy. Turns out he's from Woodstock, Illinois.
As we motored south, we got a panoramic view of Cook Inlet with an active volcano range as a backdrop, including Mt. Iliamna and Mt. Redoubt. Absolutely gorgeous. Many of these little towns along the way were originally settled by Russians in the middle 1800's. So we have town names such as Soldotna and Ninilchik.
As we passed through a little town called Anchor Point, we saw a golf course sign so we couldn't resist and turned off the side road to see what it was about. The owner, Buzz, was a character and very hospitable. We decided to walk the short nine holes. We found that using the words "golf course" was a stretch. You've heard of a cow pasture, this was a moose and caribou pasture. He doesn't mow it, just lets the animals craze it down, sort of. The greens and tee boxes are Astroturf and he gave us a handful of plastic water bottle caps to use as tees. On the scorecard the number one rule was - Moose have the right-of-way. Also you got to drop without a penalty if your ball landed in a moose track on the fairway. Again the use of the word "fairway" was a stretch. We had lots of laughs and some good exercise.
We went down along the waterfront to have our lunch in our units. They were putting fishing boats in and out with end loaders and said today's tide would be 16 feet. They mentioned in Anchorage the tide at times can be over 35 feet. That's a lot of water movement in six hours. Due to that phenomenon, they surf in that area. We were at the most westward highway point in North America.
We continued on to Homer and settled in the Oceanview RV park. Spectacular view and great Wi-Fi. Homer is the Halibut Capital of the World. Actually the golf course owner showed us a picture of his wife with a 185 pound halibut that she pulled in.
Decided to spend two days in Homer.

Golf
I have really enjoyed your trip. You have explained everything in great detail. Have been in school with Mr Babb I know this is not his writing. However he looks right at home in the rough of any golf course. Looking forward to hearing more about your trip. I should be all healthy and ready to golf when you get home.
