AssisiAssisiAssisi

At a distance from outside the bus station.
I don't really have that much to say but I did want to put up some pictures of my trip to Assisi this past weekend. I had a great time with my friend Jen from CUA and Amy Sappenoff from Benedictine College. It was great to see a familiar face from KS! Assisi is an amazing and peaceful place. Right when i got there i could undertand the peaceful mentality that the Fransiscans have a tradition of. It is SO different from Rome, and it was nice to have a change of pace. I loved the small streets and quiet places. The shops are quaint and nice and we had amazing weather. Assisi sits up on a hill looking over the region of Umbria. From the hill you can see lots of farms and little towns in the vally. Overall it was a beautiful weekend with great food and a great relaxing time...although i did have to write a 6-page Philosophy of God paper that i wrote the night that i got back for the next morning, but i think it turned out ok.
I also have pictures from my trip today with my Theology of the Papacy class

Cool street.
to San Giovanni in Lorenzo. It is the cathedral of Rome where the Pope resided until around the 13th century. It is one of the 4 mojor Basilicas of Rome and beautiful. It holds the skulls of Peter and Paul as well as the table that Helen (Constantine's wife) brought back from Jerusalem, thought to be the table from the Last Supper. pretty amazing.
We also got to go into a room at the top of the Scala Sancta (the holy steps...they are the steps up to the throne of Pontius Piolate that was brought over to Rome in Helen's journey back). At the top of the steps there is a room that we got to go into (it is a museum that most people dont know about that is only open a few hours a week!). In this room at the top of the steps is a room that was the chapel in the papal palace. In this room are amazing murals and some of the oldest reliqueries (now emptied) that sat under bars and locks since people would often steal them. This was known to be the greatest collection of relics of the time. The room is

Quaint street...definatly different enough from "cool street' to justify another picture!
beautiful and peaceful and most of it is origional. It was neat to be in there, people were looking in through the window's and we were inside feeling special. Just one more reminder of beauty in this city and a place where so many people and popes have prayed for hundrads of years.
I am going to Florence/Arezzo/Sienna this weekend with the class. It is nice because we will have an opportunity to go to a wine tasting as well as dinners out on the program which is nice. We will see a science museum in Florence which is not one of the more popular museums. It is an attempt to become more Rennaissance people-formed in all the arts. So it will be a nice relaxing weekend and we get a day off as we travel till monday night!

Hope things back in the states are going well. Miss you all and love you a lot.

Ex urbe eterna,

Jonathan

PS... i would suggest clicking on the pictures to get a better look!

What beauty is:

The chapel at San Damiano. This is where the cross was that spoke to Francis (though this is not the origional cross. We saw that! it was in the Church of Santa Ciara (St. Clair). This is also the residency where Clair lived and died. This was my favorite chapel in Assisi: beautiful and peaceful.

Apse Mosaic in the Church. One of the oldest to use gold as the background color. It was moved back by Leo XIII [i think](same Pope that founded CUA) to stop it from caving in thus creating a 3rd arch in the church.

Oblisk outside of the church. It is from Egypt and dates back to 1500BC. It is the oldest remaining monument in the city!

Castle San Angelo. This is Ponto Angelo. Each of the angels on either side of the bridge is carrying something symbolizing the crucifixion and it is said that holy relics of the crucifixion were placed in the angels.

Assisi
Great wine, great friends, great ambiance...great pictures. Thanks for sharing. It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching. St. Francis of Assisi Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. St. Francis of Assisi Keep doing the impossible! Love, your cuz

The food...
I like the way the food looks in Italy. I am sure it tastes better than it looks, i am not sure if it would be feasible to bring back some Italian goodies to eat over Christmas break? I hope all is well and that You enjoy yourself and live the moment. (P.S. I had a mouse in my room but I caught him, thought you would like to know). Andy
