Melaque

Friday

Today we headed to our next destination, Melaque. We had the Mar Sereno call the bus company and have them pick us up at the hotel. This saved us traveling back into Puerto Vallarta to the bus station and riding back again to the hotel. We waited on a round tree seat in front of the hotel. A big iguana shared the seat with us, but he seemed to be sleepy and didn't cause any problem. We actually saved about $6 by taking this bus rather than the one from town. The road is called Costalegre, the main road from Puerto Vallarta down the coast. Most of the time we were away from the ocean, however. The bus was comfortable, with A/C, movie screens (in Spanish), and bathrooms. It made a few stops along the way take in passengers. We drove through a few towns, but we didn't have our big Mexico map with us so we weren't sure where we were! There was a lot of road construction going on, with many big gultches on the side and big drain pipes ready to put in. We drove mostly through forested area, and as we got closer to Melaque we drove by some small lakes and rivers. A bridge was being constructed in one spot, and we had to drive through a small river. The ride to Melaque was about 4 hours.

Bob found a very nice, reasonable hotel online, Hotel Hacienda Melaque. The room is fairly large and very clean, with a desk and refrigerator. The grounds are beautiful, very well manicured with flowers and foliage, and a pool. The lobby area has a pet toucan and parrot in huge cages. Fun to watch.

We took a short walk around the town in the evening. It seems very clean and peaceful. There is a main square with surrounding restaurants and food booths, as well as a lovely cathedral.

Tomorrow we will do some more exploring.
