What: The Fault
When: 24th September 2006
Description: A 3.5 mile hike starting off from a parking lot near Pacifica up to Fort Funston, San Francisco.
The famous San Andreas fault gets inland here. Impossible, rather, not advisable to do it during high tides,
due to high waves and rip currents. Ocean on one side and tall 50- 100 ft cliffs on the other side.
fyi,
Fort Funston is a part of
Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Plans for this hike started off a week back. I was just too scared to do it alone. So, people pooled in. Due to the time constraint, we compromised on doing it only one way having cars parked on either end of the hike.
Peak high tide was at 1:00 pm and peak low tide was at 6:40 pm. By 2:00 pm Saturday, we were 7 of us: Me, Ganesh, Dominic, Anand, Ram, his father & Monica.
All of us were carrying very heavy equipments- Us with a
Canon digital Rebel, Dominic with his newly purchased
Canon 5D, Ram with his
Canon 20D and Anand with his
Sony 12x zoom camera.
So, this hike sure was all about the
journey itself and not the destination.
The day was hot, but unexpectedly, there was no fog then. For a minute, I even got optimistic about some sunset shots 😊
But by the time we started off at 4:00 pm, from the parking lot at Westline Dr, fog slowly began to set in. 😞
Walking between the fence, the trail went right down to the beach.
The start off itself was slow, with all the gadgets coming into display. It was kind of cute, though. We got some very good shots. At least I thought so. 20 minutes into the hike, we got into the fog, and never got out of it. But that did not seem to dampen any of our spirits.
The first shot for everyone, was probably those pros “para gliding” off the cliff.
With that many people, it was real fun. The first hour had too many stops, in the form of taking shots: of the beach, the pebbles in the beach, the Sun behind the fog, the cliff formations, the crabs, the shells, the gulls, dogs that had come out for a walk...
Talking with each other, catching up on stuff really made us lose time. It looked like we stopped every now and then and did not make any progress. But, in real, 3.5 miles is not a very long distance to cover.
With all that fog, we hardly knew where we were. We had dog lovers in our group and soon enough we met a couple who had 3 dogs. It was she, who told us that we were in Fort Funston already. We were like 😱.
The book suggested us to give in at least 2-3 hrs. It was just 2 hours and that included all that photography stops.
We should have stopped more often, probably.
We found a series of stairs that led us to the parking lot where Ram's car was parked. By then, we could hardly see the ocean below us.
Entrusting our drivers with Ram to bring back the cars from the other parking lot, we sat in the cold at Fort Funston. It was getting windier.
We would have waited even for an hour. No news from them. Finally, when they got back, we got
to know that they stopped to take sunset pictures. grrrrr...
Anand had to get home. But the rest of us, stopped at Tapioca express for some hot chai's, coffee's, tofu fry and French fries.
Stomach filled up, we got back home by 9:00 pm.
It was not a very long or strenuous or a spectacular hike, but with so many of us, I am sure, we could not have had any less fun.
We had no clue where the fault actually cut through to land. Good for us, I guess.
Yet to see other's pictures!!!
This is one hike, I will not forget in a long time.
Thanks everyone 😊
Maybe we can catch up soon, on another hike.
kudos,

Quite interesting trip. The narration virtually took me to the place. Good work. Keep sending such journals.
