Homer, Alaska

This morning began with all of us deciding to sleep in, as we are not leaving the Homer area today. It was wonderful to sleep late for a change. While looking out the window toward Cook Inlet, Ray and I thought we saw a few whales. After they hadn't moved in 5 minutes however, we deduced that they were rocks, and it was low tide. So much for that animal sighting. The day started out overcast, with the forecast showing a 30% chance of rain, but by the time we all had breakfast, straightened up and got going, the sun was shining through, and the temperature warmed up nicely. Our first stop today was the Homer Spit, a long narrow bar of gravel with is home to dock facilities and boating services, along with shops and restaurants and fishing charters. It is a very quant and inviting place, with very friendly people. The girls checked out all that was available in the shops, making some purchases, with the guys had coffee at a little coffee shop. Ray decided to sign up of the afternoon Halibut fishing excursion that left at 1:00 pm. After a quick lunch, he left and the rest of us decided to check out downtown Homer, then on to the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. Bud and John were lucky enough to encounter two moose as they were leaving the building, and got some good shots. At around 4:30, I received a text from Ray, who was still out on the boat to "get the grill ready." We were all going to have fresh halibut for dinner. He arrived at the campsite with two bags of Halibut fillets, and the girls got ready to prepare the fish for dinner. After setting aside enough for another meal each, we still had another bag full of fish. Ray headed around the campground giving the rest away. Halibut sells for $22 a pound here, so everyone was thrilled to get some. Let me tell you it was absolutely delicious. There is nothing like fish that is that fresh. We devoured our dinner, cleaned up, then went for a walk to the local ice cream shop. When we got back to our RV, it was already 8:30. We have enjoyed our stay at this campground.. The views are to die for, and we have met some very nice people here. Hope our next stop is Seward is as nice.
