San Cristobal de las Casas

San Cristobal (Con't)

One day we participated in a hike that Anthony, a hostel volunteer, wanted to go on. We took the colectivo to Zinacantán for MXN16 where we stopped for Micheladas (MXN40 for 1L of essentially a Mexican caesar). As we walked out of town we were stopped by the tourism office and told we should have paid a fee of MXN15 to enter the town, but since the colectivo hadn't stopped we had no clue. We kept walking once he was distracted by a tour bus that showed up. We walked over the pass to Chamula, where we found out how half a litre (we shared one michelada) of beer affects Dan during a hot hike. It may have been primarily the heat, but the beer probably didn't help. Ashley was a trooper and carried the backpack with water all but 15 minutes of the walk. In Chamula we visited a church that had been appropriated by the Maya people and the all the Catholics, converts included, were kicked out of town. They were strict with the no cameras or phones rule; which anyone respectful should have no trouble adhering to. Ashley got some of the delicious empanadas out front for MXN5 while Dan felt he could handle a MXN5 chunk of watermelon...maybe. It only took him 20 minutes to get it down. Then up another small hill to a cantina where we tried Posh, the local moonshine. They gave us free tasters which we all shared before most of us settled in to have beers and chips. Then back to San Cristobal on the MXN15 Collectivo.

There is a lot happening in San Cristobal being full of expats. Many shows and performances that don't really have anything to do with the area, but the art community there is strong. We attended one which featured a belly dancer, Polish shadow puppetry of Warsaw's founding meant to educate children in dealing with feelings, and a Spanish storyteller. It was all very good, but as usual our limited Spanish made it a little tricky to follow everything. The morning after that show we went to the organic market where a band was playing and did the music for a mimed play. You could tell everyone enjoyed what they were doing, and thankfully we could understand what was going on as well as anyone else could.

One day before any drinking, Dan gave Ashley a much desired hair cut, and in turn Ashley trimmed Dans beard. Didn't do too bad considering neither of us had done it before.

San Cristobal was a beautiful city with much history in the area and lots of day trips to do. We won't be the least bit surprised to find ourselves back there again.

So...world travel means less hair for Ashley and more for Dan? Short hair really suits you, Ashley. :)

More or less, hair
Ha. Something like that. Isn't really a standard, just when we get lazy. Ashley doesn't want to have to do her hair, and Dan doesn't want to get out all that pesky shaving gear.
