We arrived in Sydney to be greeted by heavy rain...which hasn't stopped for more than 20 minutes since then...24 hours on! The day before we came it was dry and 35C today it's 24C. However we had a great time with Alesandra she showed us lots of short cuts to places of interest and we walked from Circular Quay to the Botanical gardens, past Government House and viewed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House from Mrs Macquaries Chair. Then we splodged our way back to The Rocks where we are staying and found an Italian restaurant with a covered garden and a spare table as Sydney was heaving because of the Australia Day celebrations. We had a lovely meal then called in at our hotel for coffee then took a taxi to Darling Harbour to watch the Australia Day celebration fireworks...which were spectacular. There were thousands of people lots of live music, and it was a great atmosphere. It was a great privilege to be there that night. We have often seen the New Year fireworks from Sydney on TV but never expected to experience them for ourselves!
Today we have been on a harbour cruise with an excellent guide explaining the history of Sydney with many references to the First Fleet ...which our notorious great aunt arived on! - the land and property she ended up owning would be worth several millions today! (Wonder where the money all went???) Anyway we are now off to explore old Sydney.
