"It's not a coup," to "It is a coup," and I'm fine

Tuesday morning I awoke very early for no particular reason. After about an hour I realized the sun was far higher of the horizon than I'd like. I gave up on sleeping at starting checking email like I do every morning. Except this was only 6am and I was still half asleep.

The first email I got was from my father asking if I was okay. Of course, I had no idea what he was talking about. It turns out that at 3am Tuesday Martial Law began in Thailand. It was repeatedly said that it wasn't a coup, but of course, there were skeptics. I just followed the news and went about life as usual. I saw nothing out of the ordinary.

Sixty-one and half hours later it became a military coup. My coworkers seemed indifferent, pointing out that this happens every few years. They advised me not to worry but just not stay out late. And then we were told by our boss to go home over an hour early. Talk about mixed signals!

On my way home I stopped for pad thai. All the street food vendors were out, smiling and cooking. Everywhere I went, people looked relaxed, happy, like any other day. I stopped in 7-Eleven for necessities--beer and milk--and noticed people buying a bit more than usual. The guy in front of me had bread, eggs, milk, ramen, and microwavable dinners. Perhaps he's just nervous--but he's the only person I saw who is.

There's a city-wide curfew tonight (or maybe it's national, I'm not sure) starting at 10pm. The BTS skytrain stops running at 9. Malls close at 8pm every night until further notice. All schools nationwide are closed Friday-Sunday, even private ones. Even 7-Eleven will close. There are lots of other rumors flying about, but I don't repeat rumors. I do, however, hope they don't come true.

So, I'm fine. It's business as usual. Thank you to those of you who've contacted me--it's appreciated. I'll keep you posted and my fingers crossed.
