Having seen much of Rothenburg we set off this morning in the car for a drive down the romantic road to Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, two more walled towns around 100km from Rothenburg. On the way we diverted to Schillingsfirst to have a look at the large Baroque Schloss overlooking the valley, we arrived at 9.00 only to find it wasn’t open until 10.00, so we continued on our way south as planned and intended on visiting later in the day on the way home. We first arrived at Dinkelsbühl and visited the large 16th century Gothic church, as churches go it was quite impressive, the adjacent town hall dates back likewise to the 1600’s and is still a functioning town hall today, as such it is the longest known seat of local government in Germany. We wandered the streets for a while and then continued on our way to Nördlingen. This is a cool little town again dating back to the 15th century however the museum has artefacts going back as far as 1000bc and there is further evidence of early Roman habitation on the town site. Lunch at a nice café in the main town square filled in another hour or so and then with the afternoon moving on so it was time for us to leave as well. We went back via the autobahn to Schillingsfürst and made our way to the Schloss. All we wanted was a quick look around and then leave, however 'Herr Fritz' at the gate was having none of this and told us quite clearly that was not possible and the only way to see the Schloss was to pay for a guided tour, this did however include a show of the eagles, falcons and vultures that the Schloss is well known for. So handing over 14e we watched the bird show which despite the commentary being in English was very enjoyable. Off to the guided tour, again I German but the frauline did hand us over some English notes for the tour. Well 10 minutes into this tour we were both bored stiff, the Schloss was very plain and filled with paintings and stuff of the owners going back some 300 years, not our cup of tea so we slid out the back door and off home. Back at Rothenburg we had a walk around the rampart walls which gives a very different view of the town and down to a café for the afternoon beer. Selecting an Italian café for dinner tonight close to the hotel as we have to pack for an early start tomorrow heading some 250k down to Fussen
