Days 9-10-11 July 25-26-27 Dawson City, YT
Whitehorse to Dawson City 336 Miles the longest day of the tour
14 Miles out of Whitehorse we turned off the Alaskan Highway and headed north on the Klondike Highway. This route began as a trail used by miners and trappers in the early 1900's. We passed by Miners Range named by George Dawson on an exploration in 1887 for the "miners met by us along the river" noted in his journal. This is Yukon's immense plateau country with forested dome-shaped mountains and high ridges, many lakes and Yukon River tributaries. We stopped at Braeburn Lodge home of the "Cinnamon Bun" as big as my head advertised to feed 4. It is also a check point for the Yukon Quest sled race. We also made a stop at the Five Finger Rapids viewpoint. We stayed at the Bonanza Gold RV Park.
Dawson City dates from the discovery of the richest gold strike in North America in 1896 on a Klondike River tributary called Rabbit Creek, which was subsequently renamed Bonanza Creek. By 1900, Dawson City was the largest city west of Winnipeg and north of San Francisco. it was declared a

Day 10 July 26 we went on a Dawson City Walking Tour. Marie our tour guide told us stories of life in Dawson City during the Gold Rush. We went along the river, passed the bank Robert Service worked at before he started writing his poems about the Yukon. We went to the bank, the bar the home of one of Robert Services stories of the Ice Worm, past Ruby's boarding house, the printing press and the post office. Do any of you remember the ad campaign put on by Quaker Oats in the 1950's to own 1 square inch of Yukon Territory? It was during the Sargent Preston Mounty of the Yukon and his dog King. One of the things we learned during the tour was the locals work 2-3 jobs in the summer because there is very little work in the winter with the tourists gone. Pat and I went over to the Danoja Zho Cultural Centre after lunch and watched a video about the First Nation tribe Trondek Hwech'in and what their life was like and how it was affected by the finding of gold. That night we went

Five Finger Rapids to Diamond Tooth Gerties. It is a casino and dance hall. Another great show with dancing and singing and another man in our group was selected to learn the Can Can and inducted into the Honor of the Garter. Pat and I went up to the Dome of the Midnight sun and took a picture at 11 pm.
Day 11 Saturday July 27 some of our group went to the local church for mass. Pat and I and Jim and Connie rode our bikes over the Yukon and toured the city some more. There was a cookout that night and Jack entertained us again. About half of the group left that night to cross on the ferry because there was another RV group that would cross in the morning also. We stayed behind and had a "Double Rug" party with the rest of us telling stories and getting to know each other better.
