The day has finally arrived!!! As you can see by the pics, the vehicle has been packed worse than a blindfolded chimp playing Tetris, but it was only for the drive to Melbourne. Once I get Pete and his stuff on Tuesday I’ll put the roof bag on & re-do it all. Also in the pics you will notice two new front end recovery points (one each for John & Neil’s truck) and the recovery hitch on the back (that’s for Phil’s Navara). Naturally I won’t get stuck anywhere...

Got to Melbourne in around seven hours and a tank and a half of fuel. Worst economy ever! 475km from 75 odd litres of diesel. The old girl certainly does not appreciate being pushed to 110kph for long distances. A good drive though.

I stopped in at Holbrook for the first time. I’ve driven past through a half dozen times in the past six months but I never bothered stopping. This time I did, so I could get a photo of the submarine that is housed in the middle of town. I’m sure there is a good reason for a submarine being around 400km odd from the nearest ocean but I have no idea why. Probably some sort of major Australian story that I have missed... I took a photo anyway.

From there I stopped off at Albury for lunch. Boring. From there I had to stop at Euroa for food. Now maybe I just haven’t lived enough but why is it that there were three different condom vending machines in the men’s toilets in a place that is in the middle of nowhere? I didn’t see any ladies of the mid-afternoon (night) around like you see in B-grade American movies. Maybe it is the romance capital of Northern Victoria? Who knows?

Got down to Melbs by around 4pm to see Tobes and Bec. Chris will be home later for a few brews and Goofy Pizza. Ripper! Tobes was a bit unsure of Uncle Mick, but who isn’t, right? He warmed up pretty quick though and I think I have now read every book of his that has an elephant in it and we made the trumpeting noise on every page.

I must have seen no less than 10 vehicles pulled over by the fuzz getting speeding tickets. Crazy stuff especially as we rarely see any coppers in Canberra. We’ll have to make sure we behave....at least on the highways.

That’ll do for day one. We’re about to go up to Dan Murphy’s for essential supplies – lots of VB cans I suspect.
