Heading north from Katherine we have stopped the night in Litchfield National Park in the camping ground at Wangi Falls. There is a short track from here that leads to the swimming hole at the base of the falls and it is just magical and justifiably very popular with locals and tourists alike. The water was so refreshing, given that recently it has been well over 32+ degrees most days. The spot has just been given the all clear as to being croc free and is checked every day but one can’t help but keep looking around and down to the bottom given that it is super clear to see if they have maybe missed one. We had a bad night at the campsite with hundreds of mosquitoes getting inside the van so we moved to another one within the national park which was slightly better. This time we lit a mosquito coil and replace it with a new one before retiring for the night. The van may have smelled of smoke this morning but at least it kept the mozzies out!
We are now in Darwin and spent the afternoon down at the waterfront lagoon which has a crocodile
net surrounding it to ensure safe swimming. It was absolutely beautiful and a credit to Darwin. The free live music while we were relaxing in the sea was a huge bonus and we will definitely be down there again before we leave. The wave pool down there looked awesome for the families and teenagers, providing hours of entertainment for everyone.
Downside of Darwin is that they have midges, too small to see, that bite like mad at sunrise and sunset, resulting in painful itchy skin that drives one crazy. I was the poor sucker tonight and I will most definitely be plastering myself from now on with repellent during my stay here for sure.
We have had a wonderful week in Darwin, staying in luxury at a paid campsite with even its own swimming pool so have really felt pampered! Our neighbours, even though they are all living on the site permanently for the next few months to avoid the winter down south, have been very inviting and friendly and we have shared happy hour every day with them all and what a laugh we have been having. We have booked in for a further week and will
stay longer if our applications to work at the nearby Coles Supermarket or Woolworths or Bunnings are successful. We need to slow down our travelling for a few months in order not to arrive in Perth during their cooler months so a 3 month stint in sunny Darwin would be ideal. If we are unsuccessful then we will try Broome or somewhere else if need be.
Darwin is a great place for biking being so flat and our neighbours offered to bike with us on Sunday to buy vegetables at the local Asian Market which was very interesting with so many veg that we had never seen before. Also there is the Casino on Mondays where cheap meals are on offer, a free drink plus money to play on Keno and the pokies. We have won $45 so far! Won’t take us far but for a couple who haven’t had a pay packet for 10 months it made us smile for a while.

catching up
Hi Suzanne - just checked out your page again - we didn't get out that way but hope to some time. The hot weather put us off but during the winter months would be ideal. However, I have gone back to work for 2 days a week so we will possibly just take a month or so at a time and head off now and again. We did the North Qld thing last winter and it was pretty hot - not cold anywhere except at Ravenswood one night. Good to see you are having a wonderful time still! Happy travels.
