This will be of no interest to most people except my Mum and my Sister!!!!

The next day (mon 18th Feb) marked the end of our our first week on the road and we left Watson Bay in Sydney and headed to a place called East Hills which is a small suburb about 20km outside Sydney.

I lived here as a child aged from 4 to 6 years of age in the mid 1960's when we emigrated as the ' ten pound poms' and lived in an immigrants hostel.
Unfortunately we had returned home after 2 years but I still had some recollection of living in the hostel and East Hills and I wanted to see the place again 45 years later.

We arrived mid morning and I immediately recognised the footbridge over the George River. We stopped a couple of older residents who had lived in the area for decades and and they pointed out the site of the hostel. We walked the route from the site of the hostel, up the road (Sirius Road), over the footbridge and into East Hills itself. A route I last took as a 6 hyear old.
The place was still the same apart from new houses where the hostel had stood. There is now a plaque at the site marking the arrival of immigrants and it gave a bit of background about the place.
It was interesting and quite emotional thinking that my Mum and Dad, Me and Cindy had lived there. I'm sure it hasn't changed too much but only my Mum can answer that!

The only pub in the town was called the East Hills Hotel and I'm sure my Dad would have had more than a few beers in there during the two years!
A 'Pom' returning to Australia is apparantly called a 'boomerang Pom'!

Anyway, I have attached a load of pics for her to look at......

East Hills Hostel
Hi there...was very interested reading your blog. I was at the Hostel from 1960-early 62. I thought you may be interested in a site called 'Friends Reunited Australia where a man named Richard Hallford has formed a group (East Hills Hostel) and he has some amazing photos of the camp. He also has a group on Facebook. Hope this is of interest to you.
