We've had a super second week on Caye Caulker and we are cherishing our last few days until we return to the great white north!!
Not much to report, everyday is much the same enjoying the beach, water activities, happy hours and dining out. We had a few days of crazy wind but we're back to calm and perfect again.
I forgot to mention last time about Belize's emphasis on the environment. They have regulations that prevent the sea grass from being cut along the beach. Hense many spots do not have easy access for swimming. However, most hotels have a dock that reaches to the deeper water which is perfect for swimming. The water is crystal clear and warm as is the water in the channel by the split.
This week we all took an island hopping tour. We zoomed by several interesting islands (St. George's Caye, Sargeants Caye) including one island that is made up entirely of a golf course lincs style. I'm sure it is very expensive and that there are a lot of golf balls in the ocean!! Apparently Leonardo de Capprio owns an island in the vicinity.
Next we stopped near the
reef for some snorkelling lead by Rene which was great. After snokelling we arrived at Goff[s Caye where we stopped for lunch and some relaxation. This isolated island is the kind you have in your imagination - small with giant swaying palm trees, soft white sand and in the middle of beautiful clear turquoise water with no other land in sight. Miguel cooked us up a fantastic island lunch on the grill which included lobster, chicken, buns, beans, potatoes and coleslaw.
Next we took off heading towards home and stopped at a special area near the mangroves where manitees can be spotted. Soon after some time and careful watching, sure enough we started seeing their giant heads popping out of the water to take a breath of air. For those of you who are not familiar with these giant water mammals, they are a walrus like creature that live in certain parts of the ocean where they can feed on grass. They come up for a breath of air every 3-5 minutes. They only appear for a few seconds and I couldn't get a picture of them but I took a photo of one on a billboards so you
can see what they look like. While we were manitee watching we were served some delicious rum punch, pineapple and chips & salsa. All and all a great day!!
Being the mermaid I am, I couldn't resist going on another snoreklling trip. This time we first went to a spot where giant sea turtles and stingrays hang out and feed. It was amazing! The turtles and stingrays were huge and swam right up close but they are not dangerous. Next we stopped at a National Marine Reserve where we saw every kind of fish imaginable including moray eels. It was great as our guide could indentify the fish for us. Next stop was full of nurse sharks some as big as 8 feet long, again no danger to humans. Our last stop was at the Coral Gardens where we swam around the most beautiful coral I've ever seen with lots of schools of fish. Our snorkelling trip also included fish sandwiches, pineapple, chips & salsa and of course rum punch!
We've really enjoyed the meals on the island especially the lobster. Feb. 14th was the last day the fishermen are able to trap them ending the season until
June. We mostly eat from the street vendors for lunch feasting on seafood kabobs, patties, tacos, shrimp sticks, burritos, tamales, pizza, meat pies and of course fresh fruit and smoothies. Every once in awhile we go out for breakfast for "fry jacks" which are a Belizian special - kind of like a hollow corn fritter stuffed with eggs and beans.
Well another winter vacation has come and gone. We will have many great memories. We are also excited to return home to await our two new grandchildren!
Thanks everyone for reading our blog. Hopefully you enjoyed sharing some of our adventures.
Regards
Mallory and Warren
