We had heard a lot of good reports about Daylesford, and being so close, we decided to ride there and look for ourselves. Its a lovingly restored heritage country town with some wonderfurl old buildings in lovingly restored. We did a bit of a recon first and some parts of it appeared to be a cross between Berrima and Nimban, quite a sight to see the worlds oldest hippie, long grey hair, beads and bangles, going down the street with his walker. The only thing missing was the smell of hash, floating on the breeze. Having been to Ni ban once, a few years ago, we can attest to the quality of the air up there. Having said that, everyone appeared to be remarkably happy and laid back.

We then rode up tp Hepburn Springs, known for its spring water and health spas. It is "the health spa capital of the world". Every second business offers, massages, remedial treatments and spas, all guaranteed to make you 15 yrs younger, again the signs told us.

From there, my GPS ( Gails phenominal sense of direction) took us to a little quant town of Ballan, we actually rode through this town twice. I sneezed the first time and missed it. From there, we rode through Greendale and on to Blackwood and stopped there for a couple of photos (and a comfort stop) A geat photo of Heidi was added to her substantial cv.

We then found Trentham and the historic RedBeard Bakery, which has been featured in quite a number of travel shows. They bake organic sourdough break and pastries in a huge 19th century wood fired oven, possible the last in the country to bake by this means. Lunch consisted of the worlds best chicken sandwich. I am not going to tell you anymore, you are going to either visit yourself, or wait till we get home. The combination of ingredients was different, but, totally, totally delicious.

After lu ch we waddled around some of the curio shops, if interested, they can do you a deal on Dr. Who's Tardis at the 3 Fat Wombats shop.

It was quite hot riding, but at 700 meters above sea level, the high country afforded us a lot of comfort. A gr8 days ride.

Lovely high country
The sight of the hippy on the Zimmer frame reminds me of Byron Bay although the towns sound much more enjoyable. The high country is always different but always fun. Those country bakeries can be gems or bombs. Sounds like you found a gem. On our trip to Mildura AGM through that area it started to feel like it was a tour of bakeries. Lots of fun, but eventually the bikes and belts complained.
