Kinder 3
Kinder does not do well without a good caffé in the morning. Or five. 07.23.06
I was trying to sleep in this morning, as Park doesn’t get done in the days until 1:30, and someone is hammering, apparently, on something that just will not get into the wall. Wow. My room has not been cleaned since I’ve been here, but this place is definitely better than the last one. I got an email from the hotel I left saying that I had to pay for 3 days for canceling. However, I re-read all of our communication and translated every page of their web site, and no where is there listed any sort of policy of any kind regarding cancellation. I wrote back saying that I would not pay, as I already offered and paid for the first night, which I didn’t even spend at the hotel. Do they think we are stupid? Probably. Thoughts?
Ravenna has been nice, if hot. I leave, and so does Park, tomorrow. Our journeys from there vary slightly: he will be hopping on a 24 hour bus ride to Hostlebro, Denmark and I will take a flight to Frankfurt, Germany and stay for the night, get up early the following morning, and take an 11 hour train ride to

Parting was really difficult this morning. Four days with Park in Italy really spoiled me, and I almost forgot that we weren’t both going on to either place. We had breakfast at a caffé I frequented in my time in Ravenna. I had a brioche and a delicious cappuccino with a heart sprinkled on in cocoa powder. Lovely. am not looking forward to navigating yet another culture. Germany will be easier with, well, Germans that are my friends, I hope, post Poland. But, alone, in a big city like Frankfurt reminds me of being lost in Milan at midnight. Non bene. I stay at Hotel Europa, which will be, I pray, easy to find. It’s allegedly only 50 meters from the HBF, the main station in Frankfurt.
I sit in the Forli aeroporto in Bologna, Italy, watching a David Hasselhof movie in Italian and drinking what appears to be iced coffee. Strange. One of Park’s cast mates is here; he has decided to return home to Luxembourg instead of continuing on to Denmark. Park and I were discussing how strange it was that some people left home and work to be a part of

One of the salons in Hotel Trieste, Ravenna. this. Oscar (the cast mate) lives in Lux. with his wife and kids, and decided 40 days was not feasible. One of the other cast members has a 6 year old some who is with her parents for the entire 40 days. A very different feeling, she says that her son doesn’t even know what 40 days is. I’m not sure I could do that if I had a family.
I am not feeling well and hope that getting a good night’s rest will help big time. Traveling is hard enough, but traveling alone makes me almost incapable of doing anything! It takes a great deal of energy to try and get your bearings when nothing around you is familiar and the language buzzes in and out of your ears sans comprehension. I think I will locate my hotel in Frankfurt and fall directly asleep. A good idea, since my train leaves the station at 7:20 AM. I stop through Dresden (exciting, some history there!) and then has a border stop at Poland. I don’t think there is a change there, but Park warned me that when he went through Poland, the guards had enormous guns, but were very

The end of Ur Hamlet, the 2nd time I saw it. . . pleasant. Quite the contradiction.
I have spent more money on bottled water than almost anything else here. It is so hot, and the water fountains they do have are few and far between. And the water is not refreshing! Unless it is ice cold (Ha ha! Ice? In europe! Right!) it’s pretty gross. And you sweat it all out almost immediately. I am getting used to Euros and have no trouble any more deciphering coins from each other. Actually, I can imagine american money being much more confusing that these. Each coin has a different type of ridge around the edges, different sizes and different colours. And the amount is CLEARLY marked on each bill or coin. Same with the paper- different colors, and sizes. Nice.
I finally sent a few postcards today. I will send more soon. It was strangely difficult to find stamps here! Maybe they will be more easily available in Germany or Poland. I guess we don’t sell them just anywhere in the States, either, though.
I am a bit homesick since leaving Ravenna, and long for a friendly face. It was nice to (sort of) know a few people in Ravenna. Park’s

I feel like I could fall asleep sitting here at the banco di caffé (the bar at which Italians stand and drink their espresso and cappucinos). I hope that I don’t, because the fall would be embarrassing and painful.
More later once I have gotten to Deutchland.
