APPROACHING FROM SEA
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - JANUARY 29 What a beautiful scene coming into Buenos Aires this morning. It was sunny and warm even at 8:00 am. We have logged 5,540 nautical miles since the ship left Valparaiso, Chile. The afternoon brought temperatures of 86 degrees on the ship and 98 degrees in the city on tour. Fortunately, the bus was air conditioned. Sunrise was at 6:10 and sunset was 8:01. I went on a morning tour covering the major highlights of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is a large city, 4 million residents with another 10 million in the metropolitan area. The downtown area and most residential neighborhoods were clean. The architecture is impressive and it appears to be a vibrant city, one that I could spend some time in. Statuary is prevalent in all the parks, and there are many. The guide told us there are about one million dogs in Buenos Aires and one prevalent occupation is dog walker. There are frequent demonstrations in the city, peaceful and noisy, but taken by the locals as not a big deal. The tour included a stop at the well known Café Tortoni for coffee and snacks.

After I had packed for the

trip home and had lunch, I went to a Tango show in a restaurant/theater. There was a five piece orchestra, a female and a male singer/dancer and five pairs of tango dancers. They were great! I can’t believe some of their steps and the energy they displayed. If you’re a male tango dancer, make sure you partner knows the steps; otherwise real harm could befall you if there is a missed kick. Definitely a must see if you are in Buenos Aires!

Tomorrow will be a long day. Since my flight leaves at 9:05 pm and I’ll be off the ship by 9:00 am, I’ve booked a highlights tour and a transfer to the airport. I should be back in Sarasota on January 31 about 1:30 pm. My last blog entry for this trip will be posted either late on the 31st or on February 1.

I hope to sleep on the airplane like I’ve been sleeping in lectures!

I've enjoyed your blogs...
and learned some things. I assumed that since these cruises are scheduled for their summertime, that the weather would basically cooperate, allowing passengers to disembark at every scheduled stop. I want to stop at every port since I am trying to travel to 100 countries. On our cruise we will likely skip Antarctica...a long way there and back...and continue from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janero. And before Santiago, we will likely go to Lima, Cuzco, Machu Pichu, Lake Titicaca and La Paz and fly from there to Santiago. I just hope the weather cooperates! I strongly recommend the trans-Pacific repositioning cruises...read our most recent blogs for the details.
