Answer to Q5
The chart represents the cutlery rack n the Dishwasher instructions manual.
The numbers indicate which cutlery should be placed where in the rack (see pic 1)
Now, I don't spend my life reading through dishwasher manuals, but I don't ever remember seeing such a chart in other manuals. Surely people can work out themselves where to place the soup spoons vs the tea spoons...!
Christmas is a big affair in many places, but have rarely seen on such a great scale as on Orchard Rd. A week after we arrived I pointed out to Julia the guys putting the lights up over the road. But little did I know the spectacle it would turn out to be. The festive celebrations on Orchard Rd have gained international recognition: the Merit Award for Events and Programming by International Downtown Association for its Chritmas decorations (2011); ranked among the Top 10 Christmas Markets of the World by Lonely Planet (2011); one of the World's Best Holiday Lights: 10 Decorated Cities by Frommer's US (2010). Question 6
It's Christmas, so 6 points are up for grabs - or 5 for those who don't care about being first! 1 point = Orchard Rd's Christmas Light up has been taking place for how many consecutive years?
1 point = Which mall won the "best decorated" award this year
3 Bonus points up for grabs: the light-up spans 3 zones representing three main messages. Name those messages and earn 1 bonus point for each correct theme.
Plus of course 1 point for the first person to answer the main two questions correctly.
With the Muslim New Year on 26th Oct, Halloween immediately after, and Deepavali on 13th Nov, Christmas on Orchard Rd crept up and suddenly appeared on 17th November with no warning. The lights, the buzz, the show, the imagination - are all amazing and crazy all at once. Julia loves it! She can crawl into a mirrored hut, enter a hollow Christmas trees and ring the bell, right her scooter under a Christmas tree arch, walk under a pink lit up tunnel, sit on the roots of white & pink plastic trees, look at herself in reflecting decorations, admire blinking lights and learn about signs which say "don't touch, live wires"...! When I've been in London for Christmas, I've enjoyed looking at shop windows, like Hamleys, Liberty, Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Here, decorations, props and lights are inside the mall, on the pavement, up on the trees, on steps...the decor becomes alive. Of course, it's more magical at night, but the props make them interesting even in daytime.
Of course, most of the malls & hotels have decorations, but one doesn't have to move very far away from Orchard Rd to find really shabby decorations - or no decorations (as is the case in our house! Ha, ha, ha).
We have decorations, just nothing to put them on. Any ideas? Might try the bamboo ladder or the pushchair! It's going to be a strange Christmas for us, the first ever for both Andrew and I not with either one of our families. In my family, we celebrate mainly on Christmas Eve. At the Grangers' it's on 25th only, so how to merge the two for our own family? This year, we need to set a tradition of our own, make it special for Julia so she remembers our rituals for years to come.
This is how we're planning on doing it when it's just us in future: on 24th Dec, we'll
go for a walk at night, we'll have a special/different meal, we'll open our presents from eachother, we'll sing some songs and play board games.
On 25th, they can get up and open the rest of their presents. We'll have a brunch (and maybe in future years i'll venture into making roasts).
I'll let you know how it went in the next blog.
For me, it's also the first Noel sans papa. This Christmas, we should have been with my parents. Earlier in the year, when we discussed moving to Singapore with daddy, he said: "Oh good! Book us in for Christmas. Mind you, we'll only stay with you a few days, then we'll go to Bali!" :-)
Of course, he knew he wouldn't make it to Christmas, but I loved his optimism (and wanted to believe in it too)! Papa, je t'aime. Happy Christmas - Joyeux Noel - Bonne Annee - Happy New Year
