Today we embarked upon a day course in Thai cooking. On the advice from Sherrie & James (thanks guys!) we booked onto a course at a farm. We were taken to the local market to go and learn about the ingredients - particularly types of rice, noodle and curry pastes. Then we had a 20 min drive out to the farm, a really pretty setting with a fruit and vegetable patch, chickens, geese and doves! Our instructor 'A' gave us lots of different raw ingredients to try as he walked round picking it from the farm. Back in the kitchen we then made our menu of choice:
Cat: Spring roll, Pad Thai, Coconut milk soup, Thai red curry and Sticky rice with mango for dessert. James: Papaya salad, Hot basil stir fry, Tom yum soup, Khaw soi curry and Deep fried banana for dessert. There were 8 of us in total, a mixed bunch but all very friendly (English, Canadian, German & Dutch).
We headed across to our new hotel (via the Sunday walking market) in preparation for our hill tribe trek in the morning.
Bailey's bit:
The flavours we experienced during our days cooking
were very intense, oddly adding a little salt to even sweet dishes enhanced them considerably. Our instructor, 'A', was a funny little fella who entertained all with his quick remarks and innuendos. It was a day I would recommend to all, if you are in the area!
Daily Mileage: 7.2. After figuring out the canal roads around the old city I decided, in my geeky runner way, to measure the length of each side using my garmin. Turns out they are just under a mile (if you wanted to know).
