Memento Guest House
Sweet view from our room. We flew into Thandwe airport, on October 8
th. Peering out the window of the plane, we saw only water until just the moment before landing. We considered this good sign, and we were right. Ngapali beach is honey moon we’ve been waiting for. Psyched to be out of the big cities, but remaining in a strong Burmese culture has been fantastic.
After settling into our beach chairs, at our $35/night non-resort, we promptly bought a coconut from the ladies on the beach (think ice cream man on the Jersey shore, but with fruit baskets on heads rather than carts). The women waited patiently as we drank our coconut water, and then chopped open our coconut for us so that we could enjoy the fruit inside.
Having eaten fresh seafood every night, we decided to check out the source. About a three mile walk along the beach and through the fishing villages led us to oxen on the beach, chickens with their chicks, a myriad of friendly people, fish drying on the shore, and of course packs of tough beach dogs staking their claims to various territories. We met an older gentleman who had heavy barrels
Phil's new skirt
Phil was looked at twice with his new Longyi (triaditional skirt that men wear), and beard (very little facial hair in Myanmar). of fruit on a stick across his back. He went to great lengths to show us how to get to the meat of the fruit and enjoy the artichoke-like heart in the middle.
