The Begining

My adventure started off with a five hour layover turning into a seven hours layover. Arriving in Guatemala around two, meeting two gentlemen from Canada that are in the same organization as I and waiting twenty minutes for are driver to return with the car, I was exhausted! The drive through Guatemala City was similar to Ghana (Jessica and mom) but not as chaotic. People crowded the sidewalks and the chicken buses were filled to the ceiling (chicken buses are bright colored school buses that you can pay to take you places). On the way to Antigua it poured! It was like buckets of water were being poured on us! The driver was very careful and knew what he was doing. I’m glad I wasn’t driving! The driver toke me and my new friends to Maximo Nivel and they introduces us to the building and told us orientation is at eight tomorrow. So that only toke maybe… ten minutes and we were back in the van. He dropped the father and son off at their house and then it was my turn! My home is casa de Shakiva, it’s a volunteer house. There are eight different rooms that can hold up to four people. Right now there are fifteen people. Three males and the rest are females! I’m the youngest and I’m staying the longest. Not sure if that’s good or bad…haha. There are two Australians and two Britains the rest are Americans. I arrived at the house around three and forgot that I’m in a Spanish speaking country… I was greeted by Maria (our cook), Hector is the watch man and Wendy is there person who owns the building. Maria helped me bring my bags to my room. Which happen to be up stairs! The stairs are the small spiral type. So it was very difficult trying to get my three bags up there! So after I was shown my room I unpacked. Well as much as I could. I have one roommate, Kim. She was not there at the time so I took a little nap. A gummy smell woke me up. So I walked really fast down the spiral stairs, just in time for dinner! For dinner we had grilled chicken ride bread and broccoli with watermelon juice! It was very yummy. Then all the other volunteers were arriving so I got to meet everyone. After a couple

hours of chatting we went to bed.

Today I woke up at eight, I didn’t get much sleep. Had breakfast, which was black beans, eggs with tomatoes and bead. Then eight of the fifteen people were off to orientation! At orientation we were shown a slid show and given a test that will tell us which class we will be in. I was put into the beginner’s haha! Then we went on a tour of Antigua which is very beautiful! After we came back to Maximo I and a few others went to the market. Amazing! Not as in your face as Ghana was (mom and Jessica). But after that we walked home for lunch. We had noodles with basil, soup and bead. It was very good! After are yummy lunch a few of us hiked up “the cross hill”, which is really near our house! That was a lot of fun! Toke a lot of pictures; I will try to load them as soon as possible! But I just got out of my first Spanish class. It was a lot of fun! But I am really tired… this blog is horrible but I wanted to let ya’ll know
