October 2008

We arrived in Barcelona by way of our Mediterranean cruise. Rather than schedule another organized tour we decided to explore the city on our own. With street map and postcards in hand, our first destination was to find the post office. The shuttle bus dropped us off near the monument to Christopher Columbus. To reach the post office we walked along a wide boulevard along the waterfront. We had not far to walk for the post office was on the corner of the first major intersection we reached.

After successfully mailing our postcards, we walked the streets of a bustling Barcelona taking in the people and the many stores. One turn brought us out into a plaza in front of an old monastery that seemed to be a point of interest for tour groups. After a few more twists and turns we emerged onto the La Ramba which was a busy tree lined, wide pedestrian street bordered on each side by shops and restaurants. Mime, statuelike street performers were a big hit with the tourists. La Ramba was definitely one of the destination points in Barcelona.

At the end of La Ramba was what else, but the Christopher Columbus monument. It just happens that way sometimes. You don't always get lost!

There is so much more to see in Barcelona than what we saw while walking the streets for a few hours. That is the way it is when you visit a city as the port of call on a cruise. You have to be content with how you spend your day and what you experience. There can be no regrets. "Oh, I wish we could have seen that, too." There just isn't time. Ports of call on cruises often give you too small a glimpse of a city. You get just enough to know whether it is a place you would like to return to for an extended vacation. Barcelona, like many of our stops on the Mediterranean cruise is one of those places.
