Munich

Here is where Jackie got her new BMW.

I was happy to experience the Varsity at the airport before leaving America. Plan to revisit when we get back.
We have arrived! Due to a storm near the Atlanta airport, our flight was two hours late departing. That turned an eight hour flight into ten. But we were happy to be on the plane and on our way. The flight was uneventful although Jackie got much more sleep than I did.

Our first adventure developed after clearing customs. We knew the name and address of our Munich hotel but not the neighborhood. The info that BMW sent us indicated that they would arrange for a limo to meet and take us to the hotel for only 110 euros (~$135). We decided that riding public transportation would be fun and much cheaper. Only one problem, where is the hotel? Fortunately, after some time, Jackie noticed that the hotel was only 150 meters from the main train station in city center. So, we decided to head to that station and search for it.

The next problem was how to purchase the correct rail system pass. As we were trying to decide at the kiosk, a stranger tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was buying a ticket to city center. That's when he offered, in perfect English, to

sell me his active pass for half price (10 euros). Jackie and I had the same reaction: "SCAM!" But after a short conversation and meeting his two sons, we decided to go for it.

Soon, we were on the train crossing some beautiful countryside to the city. About half way there a guard asked me for our ticket. Holding my breath, I produced the ticket and to our great relief discovered that it was valid. So, since we paid only 10 euros, we saved a cool $125 on our first day (my East Point and Russell friends will understand my happiness). We had no problem finding the hotel. We checked our luggage (too early for check in) and headed into Munich to sightsee. Our hotel is near where we stayed four years ago and the local sights soon became "flashback" moments. I even took a few repeat photos just for fun.

It is now almost midnight local time. After a long nap this afternoon, we woke and got a new start. We ended taking the local subway back over to the stop for the Hofbrauhaus, the famous beer garden. We met a group of young Irish explorer scouts

Another repeat photo. So cool to be back.
that were here for a large event. They were a lot of fun and got Jackie inviting them home to meet our granddaughters.

Tomorrow will be a big day. We will go to the BMW Welt to pick up Jackie's new car. Afterwards, we plan to drive east 200 miles to the small town of Melk, Austria in the Wachau Valley wine region. On the way we plan to stop and visit the NAZI Mauthausen Concentration Camp. It should be a interesting day.

Stay tuned for our big adventure.

The boys in Ireland know how to enjoy their scout field trips. Here is one of the guys cutting up when Jackie tried to take my picture.

Every time we come to this beer garden we meet up with Irish folks. Jackie invited these guys to visit us in Florida. Then showed them Caroline's photo which closed the deal.
