Day 2: Mainz to Worms: 60km

Weather: Woke to light right- packed up and were dry by departure time- sunny rest of day. Very hot!

We started the morning with rain early, but the sun was out by the time we headed out and we packed dry. Our first stop was for water at a gas station & then onto the grocery store. There we found a nice selection for a picnic lunch and of course more water as it was 'hot'. The ride down from Mainz was longer than planned, partially due to the less than ideal markings on the trail for the Rhine Radweg. An older gentleman stopped and waited after having passed us to let us know of the paved route that we might and DID prefer :-) We had a great time nonetheless with the highlight being through the wine country. One kind German mentioned how famous the area was for the red soil and the how the grapes grown in the area make world famous wine. The vineyards were endless with the ride into the small town at the end of the valley being picture perfect. After many more twists & turns we arrived in Worms to find the campground closed. We were at risk of needing to wild camp when we asked some ladies out for an evening walk for advice. These ladeis tried to contact the owner, whom they know, of a small camping place but she was not in. They called several people and finally suggested that the Private Yaught Club would take us and provided directions. The weather was threatening rain when we pulled in and sure enough the owner was more than helpful, gave us the place for $6.00 Euros total and chatted with us in English. We clarified the sort of wine we like for future evenings of drink. The best of Worms proper was the architecture. The buildings were amazing & we truly felt that we were in the land of the Kaiser- particularly the bridge we passed over.

every day we look at your blog, where you are ? But today we read more about you and the tour :-) very nice. In germany we have a special drink for bikers, it called 'Radler' its beer with limonade, very good. Have a good time, bye

Hi Claudia & Markus, So glad you found the blog. We are really enjoying ourselves. We are thinking that we are not going to go to Bodensee because it sounds like it may be very hilly. We will let you know of our plans and when we will be back in the Frankfurt area. By the way, I did try the "Bikers" drink the other day and YES it is very good :-) Hope all is well with you both.
