Day 2: Mainz to Worms: 60km Weather: Woke to light right- packed up and were dry by departure time- sunny rest of day. Very hot! We started the morning with rain early, but the sun was out by the time we headed out and we packed dry. Our first stop was for water at a gas station & then onto the grocery store. There we found a nice selection for a picnic lunch and of course more water as it was 'hot'. The ride down from Mainz was longer than planned, partially due to the less than ideal markings on the trail for the Rhine Radweg. An older gentleman stopped and waited after having passed us to let us know of the paved route that we might and DID prefer :-) We had a great time ... read more

Disembarked at Worms and took the bus tour to Heildelberg where we had our personal English guide to the Heidleberg castle and town. It was great to walk through the old part of the town and we could almost hear the old students songs going through our heads! This was a place that we want to return to and spend a few days discovering the rest of this fantastic old city on the river. Of course I had to have the obligatory beer in the university town. Magnificent old churches with all the gold leaf that are now protestant churches. It was on the return to the boat that we learnt that we had a faulty bow thruster, they let Jen drive, and we would not be able to go all the way to Basel by ... read more

Worms (pronounced as /voormz/, the -oo- in which being pronounced as in door) is one of those towns in the Southwest of Germany, which, despite having a colourful, troubled history and a rich cultural heritage, suffer from a lack of attention by tourists domestic and foreign. A cynic would probably argue that it only appeals to tour groups comprised of elderly Germans or those showing a keen interest in the ecclesiastical, which might not even be too far from the truth. Indeed, the town feels rather antiquated, almost as if an invisible layer of dust clings on to everything, including the silver-haired locals. Churches abound wherever you look, there are seven in the historical centre alone. There is a half-arsed war memorial at the end of a pretty little park lane lined with flowers and bushes. ... read more

I'm afraid I've been remiss in my journaling because I have failed to mention a very important part of this trip: Jeremy's love of fancy cars. I cannot tell you how much he loves them, i can only give examples. So, admittedly, there are a lot of nice cars here - all kinds of porsches, BMWs, lamborghinis, mercedes, italian cars - on and on. EVERY TIME he sees one he startles me... Jer "oh! look at that! did you see that?!" Jen- heart jumps, "what?! where?!" Jer "did you see that sick (insert car name here)?!!" Jen "ugh! stop doing that!" Jer - "what? i like cars." I'm always expecting something big, like somebody just got hit by a car, or someone on a bike almost took me out, or some man dressed up like a ... read more
