Today we set off by train to travel from Innsbruck to Lucerne. Fortified by a yummy hotel breakfast we stocked up on herb tea and macarons from McDonalds to make sure we didn't starve on the train. Arriving in Lucerne mid afternoon, I was delighted to find my room was situated right next door to a medieval (and functioning) bell tower. I hope there is no reason for it to ring during the night..... Walking around the old city, we had to contend with huge amounts of tourists crowding into all the eateries and queueing to walk over the old bridges that are a big attraction here. Detailed dark paintings adorn one of the bridges and the dominating theme seems to be death.... The currency accepted here is the swiss franc and prices are very high. Yesterday in Austria my pizza cost E6.90, today in Lucerne the cost is E24.50. The thawing Alpine water makes for beautifully clear and rapidly running water in the Reuss River and the calm waters are inhabited by the biggest swans I have ever seen. We decided to dine on cheese, basil and tomato thin, crispy pizza and washed it down with some local wheat brewed beer. Sampling another disastrous latte macchiato I have a deal with Dan to attend the local Starbucks (producing too much landfill) tomorrow to find real coffee. The Alps rise majestically above the township and act like a magnet for adventurous visitors. The more sedate find exclusive shopping (think Max Mara, Fossil), picturesque laneways, heavily decorated medieval facades and loads of history waiting to be discovered.

Innsbruck to Lucerne travel questions
Good day! Your pictures are beautiful and looks the the trip was very fun. I will be in Salzburg October 2012 and was wondering how long it took to travel by train from Innsbruck to Lucerne? How much did the train ticket cost (I plan on traveling 2nd class)? Is there a place in Lucerne that I MUST visit? Ideally, I would like to travel from Salzburg to Lucerne with a stop in Innsbruck to look around the city for a few hours. Do rails provide stops like these? Any help is appreciated. Cheers!

Lucerne
Hi Christi The old city area of Lucerne is easy to see in few hours, just wander over the old bridges and take in the history of the riverside areas. If you have more time there is the old city wall to walk along, towers to climb for good views and rural vistas to admire. For information regarding train times etc. try this site: www.sbb.ch Have a great trip! Deb.
