Into Oregon
Kerry has now been in all 50 states Tues, 22 May
We left Crescent City under cloudy skies. We stopped at the state line to get a picture because Oregon was Kerry’s 50
th state and my 48
th. A little farther up the road we stopped at Crissy Field information center for brochures and postcards. It was just starting to drizzle as we got out of our cars. After that it rained most of the day, sometimes a mist, sometimes a drizzle.
We drove into Cape Blanco SP thinking to get pictures of the lighthouse and have lunch. The wind was so strong, it blew my door shut when I tried to get out and it was driving the rain horizontally. I didn’t even get a picture of the lighthouse.
At Coos Bay we found the Walmart and did a little shopping. The rain stopped for an hour or so around 4, allowing us to get photos of the coast in sunshine. Then we stopped for the night at Beverly Beach State Park campground, just north of Newport. It’s a really pretty park with beach access. We listened to the waves crashing on the beach all night, as well as the frogs croaking in the pond nearby.
Low Clouds
Makes northern California look like it has smoky mountains, too Wed, 23 May
We headed north in the rain again. Bob needed some kind of parts to fix something that was broken, so they stopped at a hardware store in Lincoln City and we drove ahead a few miles and waited next to a pretty little pond. All day the skies would clear a little, then drop again with more rain. We did manage a few pull offs under fair skies.
After stopping for gas in Seaside, Gena and I decided a town with a touristy name like that had to have souvenir shops. So we made the guys drive into town to the Carousel Mall so we could look for patches. Alas, none were found. None of the shops had them, but they always suggested we try such and such. Unfortunately, all the stores they suggested were closed for one reason or another. So we gave up and went on our way.
We stopped at Lewis and Clark National Historic Park where we got patches and our books stamped. Those were the only patches we got in Oregon (so far, we’ll be back in a few days.)
At Astoria we crossed the Columbia River
Rocky Oregon Coast
beautiful even in the rain into Washington. The Columbia River is surprisingly wide there and seems to be wide a good ways upriver. We passed through Cosmopolis, a neat and tidy little town, then Aberdeen, which was not so much. From Aberdeen into Hoquiam, which was again a nice well-kept town, to a campground right on the Hoquiam River. We were treated to a rainbow this evening.

The great PNW
Wow you're in Washington! When will you be in our neck of the woods? We have room in the driveway for at least one vehicle and maybe two. Astoria and Fort Clatsop is where John worked when we first got married and Beverly SP is one of our favorite places to camp. Hope you're planning to go all the way around the Olympic Peninsula. Favorite places are Kalaloch and Ruby Beach as well as Salt Creek campground west of Port Angeles. Oh and be sure to go in the Hoh rainforest! Sure hope we'll see you sometime soon! Laurie and John
