St John's

LOCATION: Lubec, ME, to St. John, NB, via Calais (the border)
:
We were up early and over the bridge into Canadian soil to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Campobello is a compact island at the mouth of the Passamaquoddy Bay dedicated the FDR. Campobello has been home to both humble fisherman and wealthy families. Arriving at the visitor’s center, we realized just how early we were…it was not open yet. So we walked the trails down to the water and around the “Cottages”. FDR’s parents vacationed here with their child for years, and eventually purchased several acres and built “cottages”. It was a favorite vacation retreat for FDR, Eleanor and their children. The grounds are meticulously manicured and the cottage seemed to be over staffed with guides. We continued driving to Calais the border town into Canada. No matter how innocent we know we are, crossing a border is stressful. The Chocolate Factory in St. Andrew’s caught our attention, so we took the tour of the Ganong Chocolate History Factory. The best part were the samples along the way. We found our way to St. John and had a wonderful lobster dinner at Steamer’s----“Chowdah”, steamed mussels, lobster, beer, and blueberry cobbler--Bob though he died and went to heaven! It has been a long day (shhhh no rain). The sun rise is early …around 4 AM. We stayed at Rockwood Campground, nice, clean and convenient to downtown.

Great pictures
Just one negative comment. Ganong's Factory is in St. Stephen, not St. Andrews, which is further down river toward the coast. I was born in St. Stephen and grew up across the river in Maine. We shopped regularly in St. Stephen and frequently visited Ganong's. The Chicken Bones were always my favorite treat. I bought some there last summer and shared them with friends my family who hadn't had any for while. I hope you didn't miss the St. Croix Island interpretive site. It's on Route 1, just outside of Calais. Anyway, I enjoyed your pictures. Enjoy your travels. Nancy
