Coming very close to the end of our HK & Macau campaign.

Early morning the public bus outside our hotel took us to Macau Tower. Standing 338m above ground, it is probably the 9th or 10th tallest observation tower in the world. Don’t ask me which tower is the tallest though :P

The glass floor panels on the observatory deck at 58th storey were pretty scary at first sight. Afterall, we were looking straight to the ground through the panels. It took a while for all of us to be accustomed to it before finding true courage to sit on the panels. There was a constant worry that the glass panels would somehow give way under our weight.

Of course, they never did.

And btw, me and S did have some luck with the jackpot machines at the Tower. The winnings came in handy because I have nearly spent all my money by the 9th day.

Macau’s Fisherman’s Wharf was situated next to the Yaohan Department Store. Yaohan’s logo really brought back fond memories as a kid. Years ago, it was a luxury for us to even shop at the Singapore’s Thomson Plaza branch. It was an annual & grand affair when Mum came home with the shopping vouchers where we could finally afford the items we were craving. Perhaps new clothes, perhaps delicious cookies and chocolates. That could keep us happy for quite sometime.

Macau’s historic core where the Senado Square and the facade of St. Paul’s Church were located greeted us in the afternoon. While we can’t blame it for being touristy, the buildings were carefully restored to their formal glory. And it was a pretty nice place to stroll along the Town Square that served as a major focal point.

Night falls and we decided to call it a day at Taipa Café. Nice and affordable food in a relaxed atmosphere.

Overall, Macau did offer us a unique travel experience. From historic structures (there were plentiful) to the flashy casinos (Sands and Lisboa are the 2 biggest players), the Macau Tower (nice view) and the funny dog races, there were plenty to explore. What we covered was only a tip of the iceberg. The serious traveler should consider spending more time on the former Portuguese Territory to uncover what it has to offer in a relatively laid back atmosphere on some of the oldest streets before it becomes too crowded (read touristy).
