United at last
This here town ain't big enough for the both of us... So where to start? Brady and Mel arrived here in Sayulita last week - and so it begins! After 5 weeks of relaxing Jesse, Maggie and I are ready to get going on our little expedition. As before, the general idea is to slowly work our way south through Mexico and then as deep into Central America as we can go - with as many side trips and waves in between as we can handle. Having our truck and campers down here is incredible - we have already found ourselves in some pretty out-of-the-way places that busses and taxis don’t go. Where will we find ourselves once the 5-star-Mexican-gringo-trail is 1000 km behind us?
There have already been a few interesting moments in the days since Brady and Mel arrived. Last week Jesse and I returned to our Sayulita campsite from the internet café to find Brady, Mel and Maggie a little shaken. Brady said some guy was just there going off in Spanish about Maggie - all he caught was the word ahora (now) and the fact that the guy was furious. As Brady was telling us this, the guy returned shouting and waving a 3’ long machete. He
was seriously pissed off and I had an instant adrenaline laden fight or flight reaction. My exact emotions were:
- 1) Anger - who the hell was this guy coming into our camp armed and threatening us? Bring it on pendejo.
- 2) Fear - that thing looks really sharp.
- 3) Rationalization - Maggie and Brady were closest to said crazy-guy and would therefore provide me a few extra seconds to escape the back way when the swinging starts.
- 4) Shame - How can I even think like that?
- 5) Fear - that thing looks really sharp.
Fortunately by this time crazy-guy had calmed a little and I figured out he was insisting that Maggie was trying to bite him and she was either to be tied up or he would “cut” her. As the guy was an employee of the campground (and his machete looked really sharp) we tied up Maggie and left a couple days later.
Our next destination: Acapulco - Mexico’s oldest beach resort town. Along the way we stopped at some of the better known towns and surf breaks: Manzanillo, Troncones, Ixtapa etc. We had read about a beachbreak called Playa Boca Chica which was
G46..... Bingo!
Just kidding mom. supposedly the last decent surf before reaching Acapulco to the south. We figured this would be a great place to spend a week or so to get off the road for a while and still be within an hour’s drive to the big city attractions of Acapulco. Following the crappy map we had, we turned west at Tetitlan and drove towards the coast. The road quickly degraded into a rough dirt track with more oxen-drawn carts than vehicles. Everyone was staring at us - and not the normal “there-go-some-gringos-in-campers” stares that we got from the people in towns along the coastal highway. People here were really staring - the classic “what-in-the-name-of-Uxmael-the-moon-god-is-that?” kinda stares. Obviously they had never seen houses on pick-up trucks before. We passed a large off-road military truck with a dozen or so armed soldiers riding in the back who informed us that we were on the right road to Boca Chica but the road was impassable up ahead. As we rounded the final corner we found out why - a large swampy river intersected the road about 500 m from the town. We could see the
palapas. in the distance and hear the waves breaking but could
drive no further. A group of drunk locals were sitting on their
panchas. (small canoe-like boats) at the edge of the river. We decided to hire one of them to row us and our surfboards to Boca Chica - Maggie showed more sense than we did and refused to get in the
pancha. We made it there and had a great time but the shore pound was too heavy to surf safely so we had a few coronas and headed back to spend the night at the edge of the river. We drove on the next morning to Pie de la Cuesta, a small beach town 10km North of Acapulco and will be spending the next week or so here.
