So the big story last week was the waves. A day after we arrived at Pie de la Cuesta the surf started to pick up. Pie de la Cuesta is a small resort town about 10 min north of Acapulco. It is located on a long narrow strip of land between the ocean and a lagoon. At the spot where our campsite was located, there was only a hundred meters or so separating the lagoon from the ocean - and by our third day there the waves were really hammering the beach. It actually felt like bombs going off every few seconds - the whole ground shook and it seemed like the ocean was trying to break through to the lagoon. Jesse and I were woken up regularly by the big sets and I must have run down to the beach 50 times to take videos of the waves. On the 4th evening the waves battered through a large door that separated our camping area from the beach - at that point the waves were only 50’ from the campers. The owners of the campground insisted that this was normal - not to worry… we later figured that they just didn’t

want to lose our business. The next day we went to Acapulco and found there was quite a bit of damage to beach palapas and a large section of the main drag was flooded by the crest of the waves. We still did not clue into the significance of this until later that night when I read the news on the internet. Apparently there was flooding and damage on the pacific coast from Chile to Mexico due to extreme waves created by a massive low pressure system 2000 miles off the coast. The flooding in Acapulco was mentioned on CTV news as well as the evacuation of 80 businesses in Puerto Escondido (we are currently in Escondido and the damage to beachfront businesses is pretty extensive - everyone is rebuilding this week). Puerto Escondido was so big last week that all the breaks were closed out - only tow in surfing was possible at a couple spots. This news actually made me feel a lot better because we only went surfing once last week and we got absolutely pounded. The waves have come down quite a bit but it is still huge here in Escondido. I caught a couple of overhead waves today and also got thrashed a few times. The big wave here - know as the Mexican Pipeline claimed yet another surfboard today as a big one unloaded on Bradys board - fortunately Brady was about 10’ under the water at the time and nowhere near the impact zone.

Other than that - things are pretty much back to status quo. Surfing, watching the world cup games at beachfront bars, trying to escape the heat. We damaged the tops of both campers on an hour-long hell-road to a surf spot last week. It was really bad for Brady and Mel - you can read about that one on our website at www.4friendsandadog.com

Tune in next time for more on Puerto Escondido.
Adios.

The waves at our campsite crashed over the beach and deposited sand into the camping area. When we arrived here -there was 2' of clearance under this door.
