Wednesday 21stDec. – Koh Lante – Ao Nang

On the move again this morning, this time back to the main land and the resort of Ao Nang. The last few days here on Koh Lante have been very pleasant with nice sunshine and some very good beaches.

We arrived here on Sunday, I think, time does not mean much here. The ferry over was about an hour from Phi Phi, the only down side was having prebooked ferry tickets these were not accepted at the departure point so we had to fork out another 900Brt - £18.00 to travel. Having contacted the company, Phuket Travel who sold us the tickets it would appear we where the victims of a scam. We live and learn, I guess its all part of the travel experience and I’m sure we are not the first and will not be the last. It is actually the first rip off experience we have encountered in Thailand with it seems 99%!o(MISSING)f the people being genuine and helpful. Never mind we move on.

Took a tuk tuk on arrival to our bungalow at the Rim Kaoh resort and settled in. The hiring of a moped is essential so arranged that through our hosts for £4.00 a day and wobbled off for a look round. Very easy riding here, less traffic and a much slower pace of life.

Found Phra ae public beach on the West of the island which was perfect, a long long stretch of white sand, hardly any people about and a warm sea to swim in. Spent the afternoon there before venturing back for a shower. It was at this point that the local wildlife came to life making the most incredible noise, a defoning buzz that grew into a high pitched scream. Made the mistake of looking outside and found a big bug flying around the outside light. It attacked me then flew into the room. Tried catching it in a glass but had to keep dropping to the floor to avoid its flight path. Eventually got it to fly back out and it disappeared off into the night. Feeling sufficiently brave we headed off on the bike to Saladan Village where we found the Black Pearl restaurant and enjoyed another Green curry and Sue a Massan curry with potatoes etc.

Monday was to be a beach day again. Started with breakfast at 11.00! at Mr Greens, charming little cafe and helpful owner, Mr Green we presumed. Spent rest of day swimming, reading and building sun shades out of washed up bamboo.

On our return we chatted to a couple of Brits who spend 7 weeks every year here just chilling out and scuba diving with their son who works as a dive instructor locally. They told us to keep an eye out for the monkeys, snakes and large lizards that creep out of the adjoining jungle.

Evening meal taken at family restaurant, this time Red curry for me and Chicken and Cashew’s for Sue.

The next morning, Tuesday, sure enough the monkeys arrived and played outside our veranda much to Sue’s delight. No sign of any large lizards or snakes thank goodness.

Back to the beach again today via the local German bakery for breakfast, surprisingly didn’t have to secure a seat with our beach towel!. Nice rye bread and jam plus Lipton’s tea though.

Very very hot on the beach and had to take shelter under the swaying palm tree’s until the ants came out to feed, so then back out into the afternoon sun to fry. Keep cool with a swim every 15 minutes.

Took Spencer the Bear in to the sea for a photo shoot and pictures on the beach nr the surf, nearly lost him to a rogue wave so had to hang him out to dry for a while, he didn’t complain though.

Supper taken at another road side family restaurant, menu this time fried Red Snapper in sweet chilli sauce for me, lush, and Shrimp and Cashew’s for Sue all washed down with a bottle and half of Chang.

Evening spent bug watching, reading and Skype to in-laws via Fareham office. I by this time 23.00hrs was comatose due to the unregulated Chang consumed earlier.

Awoke this morning, packed bags and chilled on balcony before wandering up to the Bakery for a late breakfast then back to pick up taxi to ferry, where I now sit blogging and looking out at a Halberg Rassy tied up next to the mangrove tree’s. Would so love to click my fingers and have Silver Wain out here! Anyone want to crew a dream to paradise if so please email me asap.

What do i think of Koh Lanta, loved it and although we saw only a small part of the island i saw enough to deffo come back. I love the chilled out, unpopulated way of life.
